rohandalvi
hi, This is my first ever upload at Odforce. Most of my work is generally done in Max, but with this one almost 90% of the modeling is done in Houdini. So I guess it justifies an upload over here. The lighting and rendering was done in Max and Vray. I am just more comfortable there. The idea is a plant that generates electricity, and machine that collects it. there is still a lot of work to be done. Mainly with the machine, the background and the ground details. Still working on that. But since the main plant is modeled in Houdini, making the variation is going to be a lot more simpler. Let me know that u think. with regards, Rohan Dalvi Edited October 5, 2010 by rohandalvi
Andz
Welcome to the forum Rohan! I really like how the image is coming along. If it wasn't for the small stream I would have said that it is a underwater image. Maybe is just the lack of colors at the moment.
rohandalvi
Hi Andz, Thanks for the welcome, but I have been on the forum for a couple of years now. It's Just the first time I am uploading my work on Odforce. As all of my work is done in 3dsmax, this is the first project in about 3 years where I seriously ended up needing Houdini, because of the freedom it provided to make changes constantly to my basic tree model. I agree with your comment that it's looking like an underwater shot. Even when I was painting the concept the overall tone was looking like it was under the sea. Since it's a really dark scene, it tends to give that feel. I still haven't started working on the textures yet so the colors aren't really finalized. But thanks for the encouragement. with regards Rohan
Andz
Well I guess that this is the first time that I have to ask apologies for a 'welcome' :-) I have been away from the forum for a long time. As for the colors, I'm sure that once you start texturing that underwater feeling will go away. A night palette is much broader than a underwater one. mightcouldb1
This is really awesome! Right now you have really good primary detail (large round shapes), and nice secondary detail (vines, rocks, etc) but I would like to see some tertiary detail. Possibly some really fine detail in the vines with even smaller veins or moss, and some displacement on some of the geometry. That would add a lot to the theme of this piece. A big round metallic shape encroaching on this mystical natural world. Good luck and look forward to seeing more! Jason
rohandalvi
hi, Started adding some more details to the environment. Added more trees in the background and some more details to the spherical seeds on the ground. I think I am going to finish the environment and then start working on the machine. Started to play a little bit with some basic colors too. Usually I tend to make a lot of changes on the fly while working especially on personal projects so they always tend to take a little longer than i expect. But I think this ones moving along just fine. I still have to figure out what kind of texturing I want to do. But i will only start thinking about it once I have finished the modeling bit. Will post more updates as I make progress. with regards Rohan

rohandalvi
started to add some details to the machine and started working on the textures a little bit. with regards Rohan Dalvi
fxrod
Good work Rohan! I love the concept of a machine harvesting energy from a plant. To sell that concept, you might want to increase the glow of the plant and decrease the glow of the light. It currently looks like the machines are casting light onto the plant instead of vice-versa. Perhaps some indicator that energy is flowing into the machines? I actually preferred some of your earlier images where there were less geometric detail on the ground. It tends to flatten the scale. Instead, I'd recommend adding some textural detail to the environment to start getting it out of CG land. Also, maybe some dust particles in the air? rohandalvi
thanks for the suggestions fxrod, I think your idea of increasing the glow of the plant is a good idea. Do you think I should remove the multi colored grass from the ground? I am eventually going to start adding particles flowing from the pods to the machine, but that's still a long way off. I have to first complete the machine arms. I also have to get started on the texturing. but that comes after I finish the modeling. The dust and stuff I will eventually add in photoshop. with regards Rohan Dalvi
rohandalvi
changed the lighting. As FXROD said, the light didnt look like it was coming from the pods so moved the lights directly into the pods. looks more like the pods are generating light now instead of the machine shining light on them. My render time is now close to 1h15mins for 1280x720 on my i7. I have no idea whats going to be my final render time once i finish the texturing and add more displacement. well i should be able to finish the machine by tonight. will post more updates once it's done. with regards Rohan Dalvi

lisux
It's nice, I like the cellular patterns in the spheres, the rays are too glowy for me, but the overall contrast is looking good.
