How was this animation done?

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how this animation was ->

If Andrey is on this forum, I'm hoping he'll be kind enough to post a simple explanation.

My first thought, is a fluid simulation with the sphere's stamped to the particle positions, but there are parts in the animation where the spheres appear to be rolling as they tough each other and the spheres are different sizes.

I'm really stumped. I want to do something similar to this, but instead of spheres I want to use cylinders.

Any one have some ideas?

Cylinders might turn out to be much more complicated, as collision's of spheres are pretty easy and cheap to compute.
