Theresa
Hi all, Has Houdini got any issues with radeon graphic cards ? As im after a high performance laptop but it would seem alienware/dell are using older graphic cards compared to sony vaio S/F Series which are more up to date but use radeon. This is the card im curious about: AMD Radeon HD 6630M 1GB Other than this my understanding is that Nvidia have better drivers for open GL ? If anyone can suggest any high performance windows laptops would appreciate it ? Thanks
edward
Try doing a search on the sidefx.com forum for ATI.
hkspowers
Yeah take it from me, last year I was looking for a laptop with an nvidia card and after the one I really wanted was sold out I did an impulse buy of an identical Vaio except with an ATI.. I have used that laptop now all of 2 times since I purchased it because neither Houdini nor Maya run on it properly. Missing manipulator handles, Houdini's entire UI flashes sporadicly and you can neither see the contents of dialogue boxes nor press the buttons. Too many problems to list.. just stick with Nvidia and be happy you did. And if you want linux forget it. lol Edited June 1, 2011 by hkspowers

digitallysane
Yes, depending of course of what amount you are willing to spend, the best bet are machines in the so called "mobile workstation" range, like HP EliteBooks w or Dell Precision or ThinkPad W. I have an EliteBook w with an nVidia Quadro mobile and it's rock solid in Houdini, Maya, Nuke, AfterEffects, on both Windows and Linux. lukeiamyourfather
Lenovo ThinkPad W520. Quadro graphics with dedicated memory, quad core processor, up to 32GB of memory, two hard disk bays. That would be my choice of a mobile workstation.

Theresa
You can find the same specs at HP and Dell, and better displays (IPS panels). Dragos Thinking the dell precision is the best way to go but if i was wanting to upgrade the graphics card how would i know what it can take ? could it take NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M SLI™ ? digitallysane
As far as I know, for Houdini you would prefer nVidia. Dragos
