Macha
Looks really great. I"m happy to see how Houdini becomes more popular among 3rd party developers.
hkspowers
Looks really great. I"m happy to see how Houdini becomes more popular among 3rd party developers. Speed tree is amazing and it's node based! I have been testing it for a bit and so far nothing but praise from me. By far the best tree modeler out there. Stalkerx777
I guess it's an ordinary houdini digital asset built around fbx file:) No HDK magic? Pretty nice asset though
Guest xionmark
Is this instanced and deformed at render time (mantra procedural) or is everything created and piped into an IFD? I've got a jungle mantra procedural instancer that moves and deforms geo via CVEX; works great, low overhead. -Mark

Guest xionmark
I might, be this one won't be free. However, it won't be $895 either! Ouch!

varomix
Is this instanced and deformed at render time (mantra procedural) or is everything created and piped into an IFD? Hey Guys I was very lucky to be involved in this integration with Houdini and right now at this first implementation works very nice, and yeah is all based around the FBX format since SpeedTree hooks to many other apps, right now it work with simple instancing and deforming at render time, works great so far, there is room for improvement of course, H12 will brings a new geo engine to work with. On the materials side, there is all custom shaders, to support the amount of maps that speedtree uses, everything works amazing even normal maps thanks to Steve Klipowicz from SpeedTree team. Hope you guys enjoy it Cheers!!

varomix
here is a pic i believe varo did using speedtree in houdini. beautiful. so much detail. varo, do you have any other pics you are able to share? I did worked on that, Steve Klipowicz, Chris Maynard and my self are the guys to blame for that image hehe, also all the dev for the Houdini side of the integration. We don't have other images cause we were making this and developing the methods and tools to make it happen at the same time. I'm happy with the result, we set the bar high and there is still room for improvement but is a nice start. Glad you like the image. anim
...right now it work with simple instancing and deforming at render time... so to get to Mark's original question, does it use custom DSO for the deformation at rendertime? it isn't clear from the sentence above, since "simple instancing and deforming at rendertime" isn't that simple since you cannot use CVEX for rendertime deforming in standard houdini procedurals or can you?
varomix
no custom DSO at all, just houdini out-of-the-box stuff, the fbx that speedtree exports can make a point cache that you can use to animate the trees, and that's exported into houdini as well. anim
thanks varomix, I was hoping for some rendertime deformation trick anyway, nice stuff
Netvudu
I don´t know to what extent does this have anything to do with how Speedtree works, but I´m gonna say it anyway. I had the pleasure of meeting Speedtree developers at Vancouver´s Siggraph, this very year, and you´ll be hard-pressed to find people more friendly, pleasant, and passionate about their product (well, maybe SESI´s very own Jeff Wagner is in that league as well). When you meet people with such attitude, you really want their product to succeed, beyond the software capabilites which are indeed remarkable. They deserve it. Just wanted to spread the love
