daland
Hey eveyone, Here's a neat feature that would be nice to see on Houdini. In 3dsmax, you can "borrow" a license from the server for a set amount of time to run on a machince that is not on the network. There is also a 24 hour grace period on the license server before it notices a license has been checked out. The advantage is that you can take real work home! I know a lot of the big studio stuff can't leave the building, but I really like the idea of this feature. I know we all have apprentice and I use it now, but we do 2nd unit work where we might bring our own gear into a studio situation daland
Marc
hey daland You can actually do this already. If you're at a company with x amount of licenses, you can open up the license server and return one of the licenses to sesi's server and then check it out from another machine. There is no time limit either (depending on how much time you have left on your license anyway ). The idea was exactly the way you describe. If you take a laptop on set with you then you can check in a key, put it on the laptop and away you go. When you return you can put it back in the license pool so that other people can use it. That way you don't have a dedicated license sitting around getting bored when you're not on set. Ciao Marc
daland
thanks marc! I should be paying more attention to the docs...this rocks!! thanks david
meshsmooth
But you can only do it 6 times or so until you need to ask SideFX to allow you to get another 6 goes at it, not enough if you ask me. This is a secondhand annoyance from a friend of mine who dose this all the time in the with of his freelancing.
Marc
really? Thats a new thing. When I was at SESI it was an unlimited amount of times, as long as you were on support. Its all automated, so I don't see why there would be a limit on it... Marc

Mcronin
No, Houdini Apprentice's license server runs in standalone mode so you can't transfer licenses between machines. YOu'll have to manually enter keys everytime. FYI it's 30 days, every 30 days you have to renew your license.
