I think first it is all about the quality of the concept art - overall picture composition and cinematography. after that ... for shure houdini (mantra) is very capable of working out such a thing. as you allready saw in the breakdown: baking a first lightpass with a simple diffuse shader, texturepainting details for another layer which is lit a second time also for some reflections - very smart usage of alphamaps especially for the edges! maybe some procedural stroke placement (maybe sprites). the right balance between puppet like motion and fluid dynamic. Having brushdetails in mind which are essential for the look and feel when composing the depth of the scene. My great respect for the creators... i think there is a reason why good references for paintery -stylized 3d animation are pretty hard to find. another one that blew my mind: (rendered with mantra - maybe technically more interesting because they developed some shaders for special light n shadow behaviour) cheers Lucas Edited April 15, 2014 by hatrick Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
