SubDivide manually as best practice for reducing rendering times?

Hi
Is it considered a best practice to always add a subdivide SOP to your geometry before rendering to reduce rendering times?
Ari Danesh implies this in his Mantra Render engines tutorial.

If so, when would it be a good idea NOT to manually subdivide using a subD SOP?
