ykcosmo
I want to try to use houdini to make architecture, and then architecture animation. So, I made this test first.
DaJuice
Cool, are you going to texture it? And what did you think of the modeling tools?
altbighead
great ... now that you have completed the simple stuff , it is time to move on to more complex building: Houdini modeling tools are pretty good IMO but I am having a hard time understanding VEX . ykcosmo
hey Dajuice,I had a clear idea when I model with houdini. And I found it is well for animtion.I may texture it and maybe not....:(and I found mantra is so low... BTW, what do you mean by IMO altbighead?
Andz
BTW, what do you mean by IMO altbighead? 18138[/snapback] that means "In my humble operator" or maybe just "In my opinion" Nice model by the way. But, I don't think that Mantra is that slow. What renderer are you compering it to?
LEO-oo-
ykcosmo - nice model! Texture it! IMO - a typo? IMOP - what kind of op is this?
Jim Su
Hey you're working on the new Doctor Who series! Looks good so far. Is something curving on the inside??? Jim
ykcosmo
I compare mantra with mental ray, and I think it is so slow. There aren't any curves in the scene, I just used carve a sphere to get the top.

There are a couple of things to be careful of though - the biggest culprit is raytracing against displaced polys. Mantra will tessellate polygons into a very dense mesh for raytracing by default. You must set your Raytraced LOD down in order to speed it up. (This includes raytraced shadows) Read this: Optimizing Mantra Renders
ykcosmo
thx Jason. But I didn't use any displacement in this test, and just simple raytrace glass, it is slow, I don't know why . Should I upload the file you can help me to exam it?
Jason
It definitely related to exhaustive raytracing in your scene - I see the inside of the telephone booth seems to be refracted heavily. Setting ray-biases and number of refraction bounces will affect this scene a lot.
