boyle
Hi guys, I'm trying to learn mantra with some study projects where I take an image from the web and try to recreate it as closely as possible with mantra. (not necessarily geometry-wise but more in terms of look) For this one, I'm trying to achieve that great GI atmosphere from the reference image. Attached is how far I've gotten in mantra, but I don't know how to improve it further to bridge the beauty/quality gap with the reference image. Any tips what direction I should explore? (I'm ignoring the DOF here, as that is obviously easy to do) Much appreciated! Cheers! 2_my_scene_file.hipnc Edited December 23, 2016 by boyle
Skybar
Don't forget to pull it through comp as well, doing glows and stuff.
Sean Lewkiw
Here is something slightly better after an hour or so: facet your wires increase diffuse bounce tweak materials to make more metallic add a env light for the wires only I also did one where I copied a light to every single ball and turned off shadowing on the ball the light was inside. This was looking great but render times were insane. EDIT: for some reason I can't add attachments... going away for the holidays, so this will have to wait until I get back! Tried doing glows in comp... couldn't get it quite looking better. Mind you I'm still learning the ropes :-) It seems as if there's some global illumination magic sauce in the render. The reference was done with arnold btw. I'm just wondering how to tweak it closer towards that global illumination look while still in houdini (before doing post). eetu
Took a quickie look as well. Main things I saw were: - there was no GI as your Diffuse Limit in Mantra ROP was 0 - your balls were too rough, they should be shiny and the blur comes from dof - your wires are too thin, they don't form any "mass" And yes, some postprocessing would be a good idea 2_my_scene_file_ee.hipnc

Gonna be testing all of them :-)
