art3mis
In reading about VDBs it seems they are in every way superior to native Volumes. So my question is, when is it better to stick with native Volumes instead of VDB?
catchyid
Not expert, but as far as I understand it, native volumes were initially developed to handle volumes needed in modeling and simulation (e.g. pyro for example is still volume based), and I guess after VDB standard/algorithms were developed, Houdini implemented them and eventually they are trying to make tools work with both native and VDB volumes. Hmmm, to answer to your question, I "think" in modeling you can use VDB volumes, and in simulation you would have no choice as Houdini uses native volumes instead... edward
When it better to uses Volumes over VDBs? - When you don't have as mentioned above - When you have a data on nearly every voxel, making it not sparse anymore.
