art3mis
Hi My understanding is that Houdini has supported ptex since v11 and it offers a number of advantages over traditional UV mapping. But will it ever replace it? Outside of Disney, is pTex use growing? What are the disadvantages as compared with UV mapping?
malexander
Well for one, it's really hard to display ptex in realtime using any of the current APIs. The individual textures need to be assigned to an atlas as DX and GL don't support infinite numbers of texture samplers (in most cases), and that texture atlas setup isn't exactly speedy especially if you're still modelling. Guest tar
UV have a mature pipeline - every app supports it whilst PTex not so much.
symek
Considering how PTEX ignores entire ecosystem of assets creation, and how game originated tools heavily relying on UVs, reinterpret those assets pipelines without f*cking it, it's hard to believe PTEX has any future as long as a plain polygonal geometry is involved.
