Rafal123
I see that only H: 7.0.176 , 7.0.172 supports Solaris. Are there any chances to see newer H versions on Solaris?

Jason
yea... thanks MADjestic for links, first is my older post and second doesn't explain much... I thought maybe someting was born in that case I wouldn't be surprised if with the current market size of Solaris (has *anyone* bought it?) that the builds would be on request. Visual Cortex Lab
wonder... I'm personally surprised IRIX builds stopped even before Solaris builds........ didnt knew there were more Solaris than SGI boxes out there on the CG market. Also .. cant remember if it was about Myrtle 5x5 but I clearly remind about having read something like "tested on Linux Windows IRIX".. and they were talking about Houdini 8.1 .. figure... or is there a Mantra standalone recent release that is compiled for IRIX as well ? would be nice to use some old Origins to render some stuffs

I thought I heard Sun were going linux.. am I right? Also, I thought I heard that the one major dealbreaker with IRIX is the help-browser (mozilla) didn't compile on IRIX. Two "I thoughts" in one post. I think I raised more questions than I answered.

Visual Cortex Lab
if you have any SGI box to play with .. and want a complete suite of freeware (like sgi had freeware.sgi.com) ... feel free to browse to http://www.nekochan.net .. the biggest (only maybe) sgi comunity for fun.. and there threr's a section where you can download the "nekoware" suite... which is -everything- that cimpiles ... packed and ready to be installed... which obviously includes everything from Firefox to BzFlag ... to gimp .. or mysql... well.. everything. I have the mirror of that website until last month on my O2 (which hosts my own website) then I removed the script which took care of that mirroring for latest 4 years... but if you need the stuffs... I'll give you the address cheers.

Mcronin
I thought I heard Sun were going linux.. am I right? Since Sun moved to Opterons in their workstation line, the have been shipping Redhat Enterprise. You can still get Solaris(x86) if you want, but most people buying those systems for DCC are likely getting RH. Did SideFX ever release a version of Houdini for Solaris x86? I thought they were supporting Sparc Solaris builds. I don't think Solaris ever had a larger userbase in the DCC Market than Irix. The reason Solaris has survived longer is because there is a large userbase in web and database markets. Sun has their fingers in a lot of pies, the DCC workstation market and Solaris probably generate enough revenue to be profitable for them but I'm sure their bread is buttered in servers and business web applications. When you are dealing with databses and webapplications, the hardware and to a greater extent the OS become somewhat a moot issue. On a related note, has anyone used a Sun workstation (Opteron or Core2)? They are a bit pricey but they look nice and it seems like they are almost always top of the pile in the official spec benchmark list.
