H9 Users' Video Tutorial Project.

Would anyone out there be interested in contributing to an H9 video tutorial project. The aim would be to help H9 make a big(ger) impact when it hits the scene (presumably around Siggraph time?).

I gather from a recent SESI job posting that there will be official vids from them accompanying H9 (or maybe I'm wrong?)... and of course there are other providers too. So this effort isn't intending to step on toes or duplicate material. But I was thinking that a bunch of stand alone 'eye-candy' style videos from Houdini users each demonstrating something really cool in Houdini (call it showing off :D) could go a fair way in attracting-in the casual onlooker type. Hip files are great to learn from, but if you're just passing by and wouldn't otherwise d/l Apprentice, then shiny free videos are a nice first port of call. For inspiration, there are tons of really great hip files dotted around the place that could easily see new life being reworked as vid tuts, I'm sure.

So often, as we all know, people unfamiliar with Houdini think its only strengths lie in particles or dynamics

How on earth are you going to get H9 copies before the beta even comes out?

I wasn't :)

The plan is to time the release of any videos (developed using the beta) for around the time of the release of H9 gold. Obviously this is all still a way off yet

It's too early for this kind of stuff, imho.

The interface is changing, probably some of the shortcuts, etc.

Until you have H9 you can't really create any videos.

Maybe some brainstorming once there's some info on what's new.

Obviously this is all still a way off yet – but the idea was to get people thinking of ideas now (at their leisure), as I understand how busy people are. The biggest challenge I feel will be people finding the time.

Perhaps it is a little early though, best see how things develop in a few months...

perhaps a better plan right now would be to compile a list of the /specific/ areas/issues that people feel would best to cover...

following on previous thread I would really love if one could cover on using VEX in POPs or CHOPs in POPs.

I suppose there are still some fluid effects that don't always look right. Things like fire (people have claimed in the past that H can't do decent fire) - maybe now's the time to see if H9 can help take them to the next level.

I can't think of any *really* good CG fire period...

I did kind of like Sony's fire on the plane from Superman, though... but even still it didn't feel quite right.
