miguel m
At times it looked too much like a half baked comedy. With very bright and intense moments, too much of the epic got diluted too often. Some rather brilliant actor performance got buried as well in the absence of definition... Still an enjoyable film, but I feel a bit sad about my expectations. What do you think?
Mcronin
I just got back and I loved it. The funny thing is that although I read and enjoyed the books when I was a kid, I wasn't excited about the first movie, and I wasn't thrilled when I saw it. My appreciation has grown with subsequent viewings, though, and I was very happy with the Two Towers; very happy. It's easily one of the best movies I've seen this year. Great story. great acting, great art direction, great effects. I enjoyed it much more than the first.
betty
miguel - "a half baked comedy"...well that's not too bad, sounds like it's a huge improvement on the first at least. you got me interested.....
Guest MG@school
Wow, the Houdini community is seriously my most favorite ever. People actually dare to critize films with CG elements (such as visual effects). I mean, take those Maya users: "OMG OMFG !!!11 that si l11337!!" (maybe a bit exaggerated). I haven't seen both LOTR's yet. But I know what you guys mean though.
Guest MG@school
I was bit vague in the message above. But what I meant was, really, that the people here are critical. They don't like every movie blindlessly that contains CG elements, just because it contains "CG" (3D) animation in it. Or whatever. If I'm wrong or mistaken... well, that's my attitude on things at least.
Marc
I think its because the other forums (no need to mention any names *cough*cgchannel*cough*) is filled with alot of sweaty palmed fanboys who are way more vocal than the rest of us. Not to say that they don't have alot of great people posting there. Its just when you get one person saying something even vaguely critical they get pounded by the great unwashed masses. If you don't believe me just take a look at the completed images section. Its filled with topics with one image and 100+ posts of people drooling over the image. We're still small here anyway. Its easy to maintain order . Cheers Marc "I got me a wooden stick sword and I know how to use it!"
MG
I know what you mean, hell I got banned over at one of those places, CGchat.com to be precise. Why? because I've once critised one of the moderator's work that he posted (with all the usual bragging). I wasn't a regular there either, so it was a rather unpleasant surprise when I all of the sudden couldn't access the forums anymore (they completely blocked my IP adress). Anyways, that place wasn't worth it for me anyways, because the Houdini forum was completely deserted and everyone was complaining about Houdini there. (And telling things like Maya, Mirai etc. is far better this and that blah blah... Like there isn't a Maya forum for that?!)
JColdrick
Yah, a lot of the attitudes in the community are pretty sad - essentially very male adolescent behaviour. When you look at the british rags that push 3d - I call them 3D porn. It's really what it is - it's gushing over technology for it's own sake - a "club" of 3d fetishists. Sad. I like films for films - I mean - Battlefield:Earth had a lot of FX in it - was it good? For that matter, the Star Wars movies. Awful, awful stuff. I dragged myself to see the last two and I walked out of the theatre thinking it was the worse movie I had ever seen. I must admit, however, that I liked the first LOTR movie quite a lot, and I'm looking forward to this one. I'm not really the "swords n' sorcery" type (anymore ), but I thought they nailed the atmosphere and I love the story. I care about "Massive", and clever 3d tricks as a professional, but when I'm in that movie theatre - I'm just a schmoe that's plunked down my $10 to be entertained... Cheers, J.C. Mcronin
I've never been banned, but I've had my butt kicked around a few forums and sorta been chased out Sometimes it's just fun to get people's ire's up. Now that I use my real name, I try to be careful about what I say so as not to embarass myself or piss off someone who may stand between me and my next job. Anyway, like I said before I liked TT a bunch, probably because I hadn't read anything about the movie at all, and didn't really have any expectations good or bad. It's a good story, the acting is great, it really has an Epic feel, and the art direction is top notch. It's just a good movie, and this year seems to have been a pretty poor year for movies, even with all the huge blockbusters that have been released. Thinking back the only big FX movies I really enjoyed this year were Spiderman which was just a fun movie, and The Time Machine which I didn't have high hopes for, so it was a pleasant suprise. Scorpion King was awful, AotC was bettaer than Episode I but still very hollow and disappointing, MIB 2 was the same movie as the first with all the gags reversed, and Chamber of Secrets wasn't as good as I had hoped. All in all, not great year for movies.
Mcronin
Read the third post in this link. You'll get a laugh considering the comments MG and Marc have made. http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33277
