sibarrick
Can anyone who has 64 bit xp answer this simple question.... Do you have any issues running 32 bit apps, specifically Adobe products, photoshop, after effects, illustrator... and of course older 32 bit versions of Houdini? ta
edward
I've started 32-bit versions of Houdini on WinXP x64 and run them. It all seems fine to me. But really, I think the x64 builds are probably better these days.
sibarrick
Sure, that's why I want to start investing in 64 bit machines. Problem is we still need to open and render H8 and even H7 sometimes... AFAIK there are no 64 bit builds of these versions.
eetu
I've been using xp64 for two years or so, with no problems in running 32bit apps. In fact I think properly compiled 32bit apps can get more memory per process in xp64 than xp32. eetu.

edward
With regards to Houdini, I think the potential issue is if you're doing mantra -h remotehost. In that case, which mantra to run on the remotehost will depend on the registry. And the registry is has two sections, the 32-bit part and 64-bit part. Which one gets used will depend on which version of the licensing tools that you're using. It's possible to get them to run the other version but will require registry tweaking. sibarrick
That's no problem we don't render anything with remote hosts as we had so many issues with it in the past...
shikung444
I've been running win xp 64 (on a mac!) almost a year now, almost all 32 software runs better and is able to use more memory than on 32 bit windows. Adobe products, Fusion, all 3d software (32 and 64 bit versions), have all worked without a problem. The main thing is to make sure you get the correct 64 bit drivers for all your hardware. sibarrick
Yes the only issue we have come across so far are printer drivers and explorer not showing thumbnails for photoshop files.... nothing major.
shikung444
The photoshop thumbnails for explorer is not a Win 64 issue, I think any installation of PS CS onward doesn't enable explorer psd thumbnails. If you had PS7 previously installed then they would still appear. Yes the only issue we have come across so far are printer drivers and explorer not showing thumbnails for photoshop files.... nothing major. sibarrick
Unfortunately this is photoshop 7. Tried everything, editing registry the works...
sibarrick
Just to update this... The biggest problem we've faced so far is finding 64bit printer drivers. No-one with a 64 bit machine here can print anything
