photex
http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=24321 Someone wants them to merge. Others dont... thought since there are sometimes similar discussions here it's interesting to see how the other sides talk about it. Overall though people still consider Houdini to be too technical for "art"-werk. Their loss. cheers!
andrewlowell
Houdini will never take off? That's a very strange comment. I'm not sure if their are any comparison charts of any kind but I would guess Houdini would probably has one of the fastest growth rates of any graphics application right now. I for one don't know why Houdini would ever need to "merge" a non-procedural modeling tool from another company. If it's non-procedural, than it doesn't matter if it's in another app or not They'd be better off buying stuff like autodesk (aka mudbox etc) I would also really wonder in a modo forum wether Houdini is considered technical because of a non-understandable UI, or technical because of the things it can do (like particles / dynamics / l-systems / expressions / etc). If that makes an app technical than Maybe Houdini should take all that stuff out Edited February 28, 2008 by andrewlowell
Marc
Seems like a bit of a random conversation to me . Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could merge beer and coffee? sweet!... er yeah, but what's the point?
andrewlowell
Seems like a bit of a random conversation to me . Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could merge beer and coffee? sweet!... er yeah, but what's the point? I think they've already done that ... drive half-way to San-Fransisco and stop at a pimped-out gas station and you'll see every variety of beer including ginseng-caffeine beer. I haven't tried it, but I suspect it gets purchased mainly by reckless college students who are bad drivers .. and have poor taste in beer. Forget about the modo's modeling capabilities, I think the real question is .. do modo users think Houdini is geared towards drunk college students that have poor taste? I don't want to jump to conclusions or anything, but this sounds serious. And besides, Adobe already has 95% of the drunk college student market
digitallysane
Reading threads like those remind me why I hate web forums so much lately (SESI forums no exception, odforce still rule). The more ignorant someone seems to be, the more inclined to post an opinion. Seems that people LOVE to talk about stuff they actually know nothing about. chunkified
Funniest shit i've read in a long time! There are 4 possible senarios. If SideFX did not want to merge with Luxology it would be because: 1a) They dont feel the need to improve their UI for what their app is intended to do. 1b) They think they could create a sufficiently improved UI and modeling tools on their own. If SideFX did want to merge with Luxology it would be because: 2a) They would just take UI elements and modeling tools from Modo that they liked, throw out all the code underneith it, and tell the Lux boys to go take a long walk. 2b) SideFX lacks the expertise in making modeling UIs and modeling tools, all the UI features, modeling tools, uv mapping, etc in Modo fills a gap perfectly for Houdini and they would keep all the underlieing code of Modo and just integrate it into Houdini. The 2b senario is why I started this thread, because it does exist as a possiblity. I will admit that 2a is the more likely senario, but if Modo and Houdini could some how come together, they would be a worldbeater. I agree with everyone that Luxology should never comprimize itself by merging with another app. However that does not mean that they should stick their head in the sand and not look outside for collaberation with other design teams that might possibly share their ideas of how animation should be implemented. I actually agree with Ulven's thread that Modo and Messiah is a more likely match as messiah is pure animation that does not overlap with any of modo's modeling tools. Tamis
This reminds me of a day i was reading some topic's (i think on CGtalk) and there was this noob posting some basic questions. Soulburn( his name is Neil Head Techical director of Pixar) replyd giving him all the awnsers he needed. Then beneath that some dude replyd claiming most of Soulburn's awnsers were wrong!? LOL That just shows how people can think they know it all on a surten point but actualy don't.(i plead guilty) I think most of the people posting there are people who just started with 3d and think modeling and texturing is the sh** and every other job is to technical and lame. Let's face it, houdini is a pure proffesional tool that from the moment you start it up will give you complete power over everything, nothing is tucked away. This scares some noobs of and some not wich see it as a lot of fun learning. Others might pick up houdini later in there carreer.
King Kirby
Others might pick up houdini later in there carreer. I'm hoping later is sooner, which with the accelerating speed of change they should be switching any day now. Regarding the thread over in the Luxology forum, I don't fuss too much about the content, I'm just happy that the word Houdini is popping up at all in other forums. This will ultimately bring more users to Houdini.
