Marc
Well, we just installed RH7.3 with KDE3 on our fancy new HP's at work. And all I can say is "wow"... In all my years on computers (and its a few) I've never seen such a nicely designed desktop. Looks very easy to use too.. I only installed it today so its a bit hard to judge functionality, but it looks sweet. Apparently Gnome2 is coming out soon, so I can't wait to see what it looks like.. yaay
freespark
Hello Marc, I agree with you as far as aesthetics go, but not on the price. I'm ready to become the westener who goes out and haggles in order to find the pieces that make up Linux. Red Hat is pretty, but it's also expensive. They claim to be open source, and they are by their own definition, but not by virtue. However, the official Redhat site does state that there is Linux you can piece together, and this is what I'm more intereted in. My only concern is whether or not it's worth it, or should I save all the aggrevation and pay $199.95 for the maintained kernel? I'm ready for suggestions, because I am ready to make the switch. Any help and advice is more than appreciated. Nevins Duret
TheUsualAlex
Umm.... can't you download RH7.3 for free...? I downloaded off from their mirror site. 3CDs (!!). But of course, you don't get the support unless you pay for it. However, I think the Advance Server and up is not free. Could be wrong, tho. Marc
Yip, RH7.3 is as free as it gets. They only charge for support.... which is fair enough. But considering all the really nice Linux geek sites out there.. you don't really need it
MG
KDE3.0, I have to admit looks very nice! With all the fancy features, transparancy, menu transitions, custom menu's etc. etc. But, I've also heard some rather unpleasant stories about the later versions of KDE (since 1.0). Anyhow, this won't keep me from installing Linux again. "Again"? Yes, I used to be a Linux user. But because a lack of diskspace, compatibility (of simple hardware like a tablet, scanner etc.) and graphical programs available for Linux at that moment, I decided to throw off Linux and repartition the resulting space as NTFS. (Since I was running NT/Linux dualboot).
