robert.magee
In this master class, Side Effects Software developer Mark Elendt shows you some of the latest features of Mantra including PBR (Physically Based Rendering) and the new volume rendering architecture. He will also review the process of rendering with different rendering engines in Mantra. http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com...&Itemid=

crunch
a ) I thought Andy himself created this as an example of archiving (delayed loading) not instancing I think, in some sense, the two things are partly related. The DRA's geometry was shared, otherwise there was no possible way that the ray-tracing would have completed in 15 minutes. Each DRA "instanced" the geometry. b ) Is instancing in Mantra not having any more memory "leaks"? otherwise it seems weird to showcase this feature. There was something in the talk which mentioned that if the primitives of the hummer had to be refined, then it would have been impossible to ray-trace since each hummer would have to create unique geometry. For example, if the hummers were rendered as sub-d surfaces, or with a displacement shader, refinement would be invoked causing memory issues.
