kubabuk
wow pretty amazing, although everything is about a good marketing Guys at Refractive software are working on similar renderer. The nice thing about iray is a good integration with 3dsmax I think.

The nice thing about iray is a good integration with 3dsmax I think. I found it rather hilarous, "We know some architects adjusted their scene in a taxi on their way to a client." Typical. Technology driven by the clueless. Ah, and they didn't show the advanced button of the render engine. I bet there were a gazillion more parameters than on the raytracer. Interesting tech though. Wonder what mantra would do on tesla...
sibarrick
Actually the 2 things I found most interesting were the multi-lense stuff allowing refocusing of an image, I wonder if it's possible to actually render images that way in an efficient manner. And also the idea of having a server doing online rendering directly into a browser pluign. Edited October 26, 2010 by sibarrick
FrankFirsching
Ah, and they didn't show the advanced button of the render engine. I bet there were a gazillion more parameters than on the raytracer. Interestingly it hasn't plenty of parameters, as you can see in this video: http://nvidia.fullviewmedia.com/siggraph2010/01-dev-alexander-keller.html (somewhere around 35 min he has the advanced parameters open). And in response to Simon's post, I also wanted to share this link, where you can view all presentations from GTC: http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/docs/GTC_2010_Archives.htm

It does not have alot of rendering parms since it´s built to be physically correct. I´m not so much into rendering, but havn`t we seen this before in other engines(v-ray,Luxrender...)? What´s the fuzz about?
bunker
yep... and Octane as well (http://www.refractivesoftware.com/). old school
Motion Blur? Depth of Field? Does that matter?
mawi
Motion Blur? Depth of Field? Does that matter? A question that came up at Siggraph was motion blur and i-ray cant do it.
Ratman
A question that came up at Siggraph was motion blur and i-ray cant do it. A MentalImages product that can't render motion blur!? Madness!
Symbolic
Very good presentation, lots of marketing strategies and a glimpse into the near future. Most of the examples of real life cases were great. It is an awesome technology. But, 3DSmax? Really? Come on! And there are lots of other projects doing the stuff iRay does. And no motion blur? All for a multi billion architectural visualisation industry busy with rendering images of some towers and villas in Dubai. Lol! Maybe I was a bit harsh... Ok, ok it is still an important tool for the gaming industry etc. And architects love it. And that iRender (whatever) has some potential. True. But hey, the way 3DSmax works is so not intuitive, the only thing there that was doomed, A ghost from a past soon to be forgot... is what 3DSmax is. Andz
... A ghost from a past soon to be forgot... is what 3DSmax is. I agree on that. And after 15 years using max I abandoned the ship so I wouldn't sink with it. Edited November 12, 2010 by Andz
