breadbox
I'm looking to create this effect. https://vimeo.com/64122803 It looks like something perfectly suited for Houdini. At first glance it looks like it could be some kind of fluid/pyro simulation. But the motion doesn't really behave like traditional smoke. I did a few basic searches and It looks like its gas that is excited by electrons and has something to do with magnetism. does anyone have any advice for how I might go about creating this effect or should I just dive in and try to shape pyro to behave more like the magnetism of the northern lights. I would say maybe some kind of particle simulation that drives the density of a fluid container and use a really high gas dissipation to suck the fluid out quickly before it looks too "smokey". Jordan Walsh
I would have thought you would do something more like a cloth sim (god's table cloth!!) to get shapes like the bottom of this: and then use that as a base to do some procedural volume stuff or pyro from there.. Although there are a few different types of shapes in that vid.
Skybar
My initial thought about this would be to use some deforming geo/cloth, maybe turn that into a volume, with a clever shader. Doing this with pyro feels like it would just give tons of headaches, and I don't think it is really needed.
dyei nightmare
im onto this, too, i was thinking more on particles being emited from an animated curve Edited October 14, 2013 by dyei nightmare
dyei nightmare
truth is, you can do it very easy in after effects for the sake of simplicity, you can do this effect easy with trapcode form and shine in after effects: buuuut... the way of the cowboy is making it inside of houdini, the challenge path.... i will do it on houdini
musamaster
An idea would be to create a series of ribbons, displace them with 4D noise, and emit particles from their intersections to get the soft effect.
3__
grid + fast $TY oscillation + animated opacity map + motion-blur...
foam
I made this by just extruding a line and then converting geo into a volume with a color field. I'll try rendering an animation.
