Houdini Indie

Recommended Posts

Nice! But just to clarify, the ApprenticeHD program will be going away, and once our current license expires, we'll have to migrate to Indie if we want the non-watermark version?

Correct, you essentially gain export and limited commercial options and pay an extra $99 a year for it.  The limited commercial being <=$100k a year but if I was to make 100K a year in 3D I would buy the full version. That aspect I'll never understand because essentially anybody making over the cost of a full FX license a year would simply purchase the full FX license and not look at an Indie version. This really should be for people either not making any money or less than the cost of a full FX license imo.

Lol... Which do you prefer?

4.5K (income)- 4.5K( Fx cost) = $0 (for living)

or

4.5K (income) - 0.2k (Indie cost) = $4.3K gross for living.

4.5k a month would be more logical, you cant live with 0 income.

But i dont see where is the problem, this is still much more usable than Maya LT and cheaper at the same time. Only big problem for freelancers/hobbysts can be the 3rd party render engine limit.

Let me clarify my point.  I don't understand HAVING a 100K commercial restriction when I think anybody that makes 4.5K to 99K off of Houdini would probably purchase the full Commercial FX package. Nobody can make a living off of 4.5K obviously and this would be a side business that you could then make a profit going forward after year one.  But anybody that is making X amount over 4.5K minus the cost of living that is reasonable to them, say 50K perhaps in the United States..would probably shell out the 4.5K for the full license.  I guess if you have resigned yourself that you won't go over the 100K any year in your profession, you could save costs by using the Indie version, all other things being equal.

I just think that the commercial restriction doesn't make sense at 100K and makes more sense to have a version at a lower value, all other users being able to justify the full commercial package and shelling out 4.5k or whatever.

This is incorrect. Any reduction in cost to a business can be used for other purposes.  Small business 101.

SideFX announces Houdini Indie for independent animators and gamemakers at $199 USD annually

My advice guys, if you target it at gamemakers, you should show some love on PolyCount forum. This is where gamemakers live. This is where Quixel moved their official forum, to be closer to gamemakers community. This is where Allegorithmic also have long official topics about what is happening in their camp. Every announcement those companies make, this is the first site that knows about it, because this is the site where the game is on 24h/7d.

At least do official announcement there.

You should think about clarifying your original comment to something less condescending, seeing as any reduction in cost somehow hasn't applied to you.

Never met a person, who truly wants to be in business, think that talking about money and costs is condescending. Sorry that you felt it was.

Mantra is very solid - 3rd party render engine will mean Renderman and Arnold, and I'm not too sure they beat Mantra :)

I'm sure they wont ... if you dive seriously in mantra the flexibility and versatility it offer + the low level TD needeed to build your pipeline is just Gold. The only big cons is that you have to build your own shader, cause Mantra Shader is average imo.

That's agreat news SESI it avoid me the pain to work on Maya on my personnal projects.

How about Youtube ? For the past 2 years I've been learning how to model, sculpt, rig and animate and it's finally come to the point where I need to dive into the far more technical stuff (ie. Houdini) for effects and rendering and having a cheap license that would allow me to actually monetize my income instantly instead of wondering how to purchase a $5.5K edition of H is just awesome. Now I know many of you would probably never consider doing that type of work (that is, low quality stuff) but the truth is, there are no channels out there creating decent CG content related to game lore etc. The closest I've found are these ;

//
, which is just sad.

I'd love to see people actually try and who knows, maybe at some point even make actual use of those youtube networks the way they were meant to be - as a way for content creators to collaborate on big projects. With the way other companies (like AD and The Foundry) price and limit their software packages, I see Houdini as the only viable option for doing something along those lines right now.

Anyway, I'm really excited for this. Thanks SideFX !

You still have never met that person, because I never suggested I was or wanted to be in the business nor think it's condescending to talk about money and costs.  That's what I talked about.  It was condescending for you to add the "Small Business 101" comment as if I don't have an understanding of fixed versus variable costs, growth, etc.

Unless I am wrong, you stated that "ANY" reduction in cost would be made by anybody that had Small Business 101 sense.  The fact that YOU apparently can't answer the question of what software YOU rent, strongly suggests that you don't rent any software.  So, why not?  If it's Small Business 101 for everyone to simply rent everything for any reduction in cost, why do you not rent any software, why don't Carpenters, Plumbers,Mechanics, Artists of other media not all rent their tools?  There are reasons why it makes sense for other businesses to buy versus lease property for example...I was just giving my opinion as to why I thought it didn't make sense to "lease" this Indie software in scope of the details known.

I do now concede a reason, at some point, brought forth by Georgie as making sense to me.

Georgie, that makes sense.  I'm not saying I agree that the youtube business model is good or not, because I just don't know enough about it to form an opinion but it sounds like this change in the software license with it's export options will work better for your needs and you have outgrown the Apprentice HD.  You will know within a year whether you can monetize your investment on youtube and/or gain a non-commercial enjoyment that is reasonable to you for $199 a year. I hope you get what you are looking for.

 Given the endless work in progress nature of software I much prefer the 'rental' model over the perpetual license for one particular revision model with maintenance and upgrades costing an extra fee.

 If you really want to own software in the same way other artists own their tools, you need to write it yourself or purchase the source code and the rights. Even open source software isn't 'owned' in the traditional use of the word.
