Guest tar
Not sure if these are official results, but OpenCL on Gtx1080 looks maybe 20% on average better than 980ti. http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=407550 Still expect it to be good for viewport and Cuda performance, say for multiple 4K screens and NukeX, but Houdini sims may not get the boost in performance that the TFlops propose. lukeiamyourfather
If you're after OpenCL performance for Houdini simulations it's hard to be the Radeon R9 390X right now. The 8GB of memory is also hard to beat for the money. It seems that Nvidia isn't making OpenCL performance a priority.
Guest tar
Nice! that looks good, though I'm a touch hesitant as the last AMD board is currently being dissected as simming killed it. Maybe the Sapphire fan and heatsink wasn't up to scratch or OsX thermal management is junk.
malexander
There's also a rumoured TitanX based on a GP102 GPU, with more 50% more ALUs (3840). Still speculated to have 1/32 FP64 based on die size, though (not that it matters for Houdini). http://techreport.com/news/30174/rumor-a-gp102-geforce-titan-and-gtx-1080-ti-are-in-the-works If the 24GB VRAM of GDDR5X is accurate, it's not going to be cheap - probably quite a bit more than the previous Titan. Guest tar
Nice, that should perform better! On the memory side; I've the gpu memory monitor open and Houdini, OpenGLROP, a 4K and 2k screen almost gobbles all the 980's 4GB memory up pretty quickly! 8GB might be enough but maybe more is better especially with OpenCL tasks. Out of interest does anyone have experience with these founders/reference designs fan and thermal unit, like on the Gtx 1080? The 980 evga is super quite, in comparision with the Amd 7950, and, it had a similar looking thermal design as the 1080. Edited May 27, 2016 by tar Add Houdini memory usage on
malexander
I tested a GTX690 with the Nvidia reference cooler a few years ago and it was pretty quiet. As today is the 1080's release day, there should be a few reviews with acoustic testing out there soon.
Skybar
Can houdini use more than one graphics card for OpenCL? I'm thinking it might be cheaper to go for like 2x 1070, rather than a Titan or whatever.
Guest tar
You're meant to be able to launch two Houdinis that can then each use a graphics card for OpenCL, but sharing the workload isn't happening yet. H16 maybe, and it should happen at one point in the future, via TBB or a later version of OpenCL. Octane can use multiple cards, which makes rendering a piece of cake.
