I have a point cloud I am refracting through a noise deformed grid, and then projecting those points on another plane, and finally coloring them by density of the projected point cloud. I also wrote a real time implementation of caustics by approximating the refractive surface via individual patches, which works great but doesn't create as smooth caustics as this method.
