malexander
You should download the Qt5 version unless you have some particular need for Qt4 (such as a lot of Qt4 add-on scripts, which doesn't appear to be the case). For bug fixes, you'll want the Daily Build page found here: https://www.sidefx.com/download/daily-builds
Pancho
Thanks for the hint, but I still don't understand whether I need the regular H16 version or the one with support for Qt4. So far there's none with Qt5 support. Will there be less lag with Qt4 support? If the Qt4 version is the one to go, where do I get Qt5 from? The question I get in this link, give me the impression that I want to download a developer's toolkit. No idea at all what this is all about/correct. https://www.qt.io/download/ P.S.: Running Windows 7 on all workstations which aren't connected to the web. lukeiamyourfather
You don't need to download anything extra to install Houdini. Qt is a framework for building graphical interfaces for software that only developers need to have installed. If you don't know what this means then just download Houdini 16 installer at the top of the download page (or one of the daily builds for Houdini 16). The Qt4 version at the bottom of the page is for studios with tools built with Qt4 integrated into Houdini. Again, if you don't know what this means then just ignore the Qt4 version completely because you don't need it.
Pancho
Cool! Thanks for the clarification. So, then waiting for new builds and hope the lags will be gone is the only way to get a usable H16?
malexander
You can also try installing the Nvidia 378 driver series, if you're using an older driver. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

The latest daily builds have addressed the viewport performance issues. For example the link below for the Windows daily build (16.0.541). https://www.sidefx.com/download/download-houdini/48682/ If you're not familiar with daily/nightly build concept please read this link below. They're generally not as reliable as the stable releases but they might fix bugs you're encountering and get you by until the next stable release. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daily_build

Pancho
This seems to be H16, not hardware specific. H15.5 runs smoothly.
Guest tar
It runs fine here on MacOs on one monitor. Both H15.5 and H16.

There's a viewport performance issue with the first public release of Houdini 16. It has since been fixed in the daily builds (as discussed above). Below is the journal entry with at least one of the issues being fixed. https://sidefx.com/changelog/?journal=16.0&categories=&body=viewport&version=16.0.528&build_0=&build_1=&show_versions=on&show_compatibility=on&items_per_page=
Guest tar
@lukeiamyourfatherI know; all the information is scattered across many posts and there are many variables - there is https://sidefx.com/forum/topic/48607/#post-219607, there is the QT4 vs 5, there is 1 vs 2 monitors. there is driver versions, there is OS versions etc. The question was is there any way to get usable H16- the answer is yes. EDIT: Anyways this whole thread only serves to reinforce positively, the validity of opening the beta up to more Indie users. EDIT2: maybe though it's all related to the latest wikileaks dump "DO NOT perform operations that will cause the target computer to be unresponsive to the user (e.g. CPU spikes, screen flashes, screen 'freezing', etc.," the document warns. https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/03/malware-101-the-cias-dos-and-donts-for-tool-developers/ Edited March 8, 2017 by tar
Thomas Helzle
I can only get the Qt4 version to work at all on my Windows 8.1 x64 machine, the normal Qt5 version throws errors all the time ("No Qt binding were found") and can't find pyside. So that is another reason for the Qt4 version being there. I'm on it with support, but so far we have no clue what's wrong. Cheers, Tom
