StepbyStepVFX
Seems several techniques have been used : shading when it is an animated blobby form + secondary splashes in FLIP (or something like that); mix of shading on animated blobby form + transition to a FLIP sim when the wave is falling apart... There is an interview of one guy on this link, there are some start of explanations, from which I infered the above techniques... But I don't know. https://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/effects-tech-behind-moana-145202.html Edited September 28, 2018 by StepbyStepVFX
dyei nightmare
the core of that is not really a fluid, is just the the shaders, but with some little fluid in the tip, and in other cases the directions of a rigged blobby surface are added to some of the fluid tips
