Look forward on SIGGRAPH's papers of Geoffrey Gardner (course notes 22 at 1994 for example)

and related materials by David Ebert, F.Kenton Musgrave, Darwyn Peachey, Ken Perlin etc.

A good book that goes really in depth about different types of noise/cloud generation is "Texturing and Modeling: A procedural approach" which I believe is what renderfox is refering to.
