anim
or if you want to be precise, keep top polys of your shape and boolean with a plane to create seam ray_boolean_seam.hiplc
Houdini7
or you can create a curve on the object. use the object as second input of the curve and it will be projected onto the object.

Hi, Jumping on this if I may... I tried it, and can't seem to get the intended results. I tried connecting the input of a curve node to the output of a tube/grid/etc, before or after I start drawing the curve points, and I get no snapping to the input mesh. I tried transforming/moving the input mesh too, no change. What am I missing?

The curve sop can accept another curve as input, then it will snap to this curve (sometimes needed, but not what you want). But the drawcurve sop works like you would expect. Try it.
Herve
oh I see. 'drawcurve' sop, indeed. Thank you!
