Jason
Maybe problem with some Houdini users is that they forget that on the end of the day this program is made to produce nice pictures. I think this can definitely be true, Andrew. It's refreshing to see good looking images and it really doesn't matter how cleverly they're created. But as to why you don't see tons of user galleries out there for Houdini (I extracted this a question from your statement), I think there are two big reasons behind this: firstly, the product is generally priced in the professional range - except for Apprentice, of course; a great gift to us - and professionals are very busy making images for clients. So generally we are making a couple of CG elements living alongside the work of 5 other people (compositors, painters, etc) in the same image, conforming to the vision of someone else (the Director and Visual Effects Supervisor). So besides this giving little mental or emotional ownership over the image as well as no legal ownership - and even if a single artist dressed up every pixel himself and was proud of his work, the image is not his in so many ways. And to boot he cannot post it up anywhere, legally speaking. And then after 10hrs or 12hrs of being at work, you might see a commercial artist visibly wince at the sight of his computer at home - when it's time to be himself and let creative juices flow. Such is the life of the commercial artist, isn't it? We all know this too clearly:)
