MADjestic
Hi there, I've just come up with 2 uber questions: 1) Why Mantra is called Mantra? 2) Why Houdini is called Houdini? Any data\suggestions\speculations on that? rrr

Leylabot
Hi there,I've just come up with 2 uber questions: 1) Why Mantra is called Mantra? 2) Why Houdini is called Houdini? Any data\suggestions\speculations on that? rrr Well, it's called Houdini because it can help you get out of the most difficult situations in production. I don't remember why it's called Mantra, I'll have to ask Mark.
pbowmar
Additional tidbits: The Channel Editor is/was called "Jive." I still call it Jive but I'm old IIRC Prisms had 2 renderers, "Crystal" (a scanline renderer) and "Mantra" the raytracer we know and love. Hmm, both are quite new-agey names... There are various internal names for Houdini like ODIN (Objects, I think) and JEDI (can't remember) and CHILI (Chops, I think). Check out $HFS/houdini/config/Icons/Sample/ for ooooollllldddd icon examples. I miss the Cookie SOP easter egg... malexander
Houdini - Dale Ducharme came up with the name when he was a co-op. You might have to ask him, but Leyla may be right other internal stuff... JEDI - Object view COLA - old POP view (aaarrrg... now POPUI) FUSE - Pane UI THOR - Render scheduler PSI - Parameter dialog SAGE - old PRISMS SOP editor and CHILI (CHOP UI) is now CHUI. Bonus question: What does PRISMS stand for? (I can't remember )
TheUsualAlex
"CHILI" and "PSI"! hahaha! that's funny. PhotoRealistic Image Synthesis and Mathematical Simulation? I don't remember.... Wasn't ICE the compositor or did I mixed up some proprietary compositor with Houdini's? So, any more interesting name for present day Houdini? You know, those interesting names could almost be SESI's marketing materials.
Visual Cortex Lab
Dunno why/how but I also remember ICE as the compositor...
old school
Yep ICE was the compositor compositor. Mojo was the morph package. Lava was the old PRISMS material editor. Action was the old PRISMS 3d application.
