Linux is not only best. It has its cons and pros, but Vista i.e. has come to a point where it is actually easy to use linux. Linux on the other hand has evolved so much, that a fresh install of Fedora Core 6 in my case, did not require me to do anything, but install latest nvidia drivers, which was done by typing one line in command prompt "yum install kmod-nvidia"

I totally migrated to Fedora, or linux in general, around 1 year ago .. and I'll never go back to windows :) ... i've got two laptops.. one windowed.. once tuxed... they're both Thinkpads 'p' series... and its ridiculous the difference in term of speed, responseness, and reliability between both ...

i dont miss Windows at all ... except to play American Army.... and for the "day by day little utils which arent on windows, like mobile softwares or really not much else, i use vmware.

Linux the Best! :) Причем почти бесплатный ;)

I agree with no doubt.

I have an HP pavillon, I don't remember the exact model.

This laptop came with a preinstalled windows XP. The "great" thing is that you can only use the windows version they install into the laptop because it has all the sata, and motherboard drvivers.

And because to use this drivers during the W$ install process you have to use a floppy disk, and this laptop doen't have one you have to stay witrh your original XP.

To install a my dear Ubuntu in the laptop I have to run qparted to resize the win partition.

Cross my finfergs ans then I have enoub space to install the real system for the laptop.

Now I only use linux except when I have to do something in Lightwave or Fusion.

Laptops and windows installation are a mess.

No comments about this machine resources eater called Vista.

Hey, they just ported Fusion to Linux. What are you waiting for?

Dragos

I dont believe you can buy Fusion for Linux just yet. Now Fusion and photshop are the only apps, which make my windows desktop justify it's exsistence =) The moment I will replace those - I will put linux on the desktop as well.

Yes I know, but I hgaven't had time to test it. And I have benn talking with the Fusion reseller in Spain a couple of weeks ago and when I talked him about the linux version he told me: "linux? what linux?" :(

And about Photoshop I know that version 7 works easily with wine but cs's versions are a hell to put run on linux, and even more when you are using a wacom tablet.

But is a point I am know researching, and there is a very interesting discuss in the linuxwacom project mailing list now about photoshop/wine/wacom:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.p...;forum_id=19620

For the moment I will stay with the gimp that solves me the job day by day.

mhh, I must admit that this part makes some problems... at least I guess it has some relation ship to graficdirvers.

when I want to start houdini, after all this i get this:

houdini: error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

it is a standard fedora installation with nvidia drivers installed. nothing else, and houdini of course

what to do now?

This is weird! Did you source houdini script and ran it outside hfs directory? Thats what I do each time I run it. Also what version of FC are you running?

yes, really wired, I installed fedora core 6 and i sourced the houdini_setup_bash

i tried both ways, installing nvidia manually and with yum install kmod-nvidia, the nvidia logo is there , I can use dual view and Direct Rendering has a yes behind it.

martin

PS: libGLU.so.1, what is it?

That seams like your hardware acc. lib. So there might be something wrong with drivers install.

Di you get kmod-nvidia on livna?

yes, i tried this and also the manual installation with the package of nvidia.com

two ways same result. houdini will not start.

just to be sure, after

source houdini_setup_bash

I can start houdini by tzping houdini, right? od do I have to setup something else, too

bitchy comp

after getting over this adding the line

/usr/local/lib

into the /etc/ld.so.conf file i get the next fullstop:

houdini: error while loading shared libraries: /opt/hfs8.1.874/dsolib/libHoudiniUT.so: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied

may be this is not my distro

thanks edward, I will use it next time, for now suse is running. it is impressive how well houdini performs on linux. maybe it is subjective impression, but is it possible that houdini can handle more geometry on linux than on windows? also nice , htis error message: "Fork failed for 'exec mantra': Cannot allocate memory", with houdini keeping alive. I never saw this error message on windows, probably houdini died before.

To sum up, it is a pleasant experience to use houdini on linux.

Okey guys, just to let everyone know, Im staying with linux. I just finished all the pain - and here comes all the joy. I got my Vaio laptop to have WiFi, sound All those extra buttons, nvidia card, sata raid and of course houdini to work like a charm on Ubuntu 6.10

Am I not the happiest man on earth? =))
