Compute the silhouette of a character

How would you compute a silhouette of a character, with respect to a camera.

It doesn't have to be a proper set of curves, though it would be nice. It only needs, at the very minimum, to be a cloud of points on the silhouette.

Also, how would you integrate points that are not strictly on the silhouette, but would be nice to have, for example to emulate a hand drawing.
