alpotnis
hello to all the members... i am here for some advice for my internship with sidefx.I have a lil situation here which am not sure how to tackle. The story so far is that i have been offered a internship opportunity with sidef at their Toronto office starting from Jan 2009 for 4 months. Now since i am a resident of India (mumbai) i would have to procure a 'work permit' visa in order to get a temporary paid position(intern). However the Canadian High commission in India needs a clearance in terms of HRSDC clearance, which the company (sidefx) cannot provide me with. Now i do have an option to do this training as an unpaid intern on a visitors visa. Which means i will have to put in a reasonable amount to sustain myself in canada for 4 months. I am a lil confused if its all worth taking the risk of giving up my job here in india to do this course, when i am well established. Will learning the software with all the online tutorial be the same as doing an internship with sidefx? I am sure that the exposure that i will get with sidefx will be incomparable. However i would greatly appreciate any comments and advice in this regard. Thanks alok
Marc
SESI is amazing in helping their interns find decent jobs in the industry once their internship is over. That's not necessarily a guarantee, of course, but they certainly put a priority on it (or they used to, I may be out of it a bit)... and the exposure you get is incredible too. Meeting people face to face makes a huge difference in getting a job. Is it worth the risk? Well only you can answer that, but it is certainly very valuable... michael
is it possible to take a leave of absence from your current job?...so that, at worst, after your internship you can go back?
stevenong
Hi, Being a former intern who worked unpaid for almost a year but was provided accomodation, I can say it was worth it... for me. Maybe the decision was easier for me because I wasn't well established and had nothing to lose. Learning the software through tutorials will never be the same because you get to interact with everyone in the office, customers and/or other interns. Like Marc said, the exposure you get is invaluable and SESI always try to help their interns, provided you do well enough to give them the confidence to recommend you. Michael's suggestion is good so at least you can still go back to your job if the internship doesn't work out. Good luck! Cheers! steven

stevenong
Hi alok, You're welcome though I have to put down a disclaimer because every internship will be different. Still, I highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in an internship with SESI. Please let me know if you have any questions though it's been 8 years since my internship. Wow... how time flies... Cheers! steven
