Houdini and Arnold

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is Frederic Servant, main developer of HtoA, the Houdini to Arnold plugin at Solid Angle.

HtoA is currently in private alpha with a limited number of testers. If you are interested in testing and willing to provide feedback, please contact us through http://www.solidangle.com/info.html but I cannot guarantee we will accept everyone at this point.

The test platform is currently Linux. Windows and Mac ports are coming soon. You'll also need access to an Escape or Master license, Apprentice or Apprentice HD won't work.

I'll also be at Siggraph next month, contact me if you want to meet and discuss HtoA or Arnold and maybe get a quick demo.

Cheers,

--

Fred

i would be curious to know if you will support UV space rendering in Arnold in order to generate lightmap. hope i am not asking you to break any NDA :)

It's not supported yet in HtoA but it's possible with a bit of programming by using the "free" render mode in Arnold.

Very nice interview with Marcos on the latest and greatest with Arnold.   Houdini-Arnold plug-in @ ~25min

Exciting times!

Edit: The take away is that HtoA has been used in production but is not ready for release and no shipping date, yet. It needs to cook some more to be production ready.

Hi kikou,

Just testing 'htoa-1.4.0_r1291_houdini-14.0.291_darwin'; was wondering if you are working on a way to improve the time it takes to start rendering a new frame? It's currently very similar to Mantra i.e. a delay of a few seconds, where-as in testing of 3Delight for Maya it immediately starts rendering a new frame as soon as it finishes the previous one.

Thanks!

Have you measured export times in 3Delight in Houdini? Perhaps Houdini is the bottleneck here?

Hi Marty,

The Houdini way is to spawn a separate render process and since you need to pass the scene data from Houdini, this might take a while depending on the size of your scene. The Arnold plugins on Maya and other applications usually render in the same process, which is a lot faster of course. One advantage of rendering in a separate process is that if the render crashes, Houdini is unaffected. Katana uses a separate process as well btw.

If you want to compare apples to apples, I suggest you try the Arnold plugin for Maya and see how it compares to 3Delight. I'd love to optimize this HtoA as well, I have a few ideas on how to improve this, would you mind sending a repro scene showing this delay?

Oh, do you have a license btw? If not, be sure to toggle "Skip License Check" on the ROP as Arnold will try to grab a license token when you render, and time out after a few seconds, so this could be causing some apparent sluggishness.
