amm
Hello, got the first shape of this thing occasionally, playing with VDB nodes. Houdini made the work 'finished', somehow. It's network of 'VDB from polygons' nodes. Highly smoothed, low resolution VDB, combined as SDF union with sharp one. SDF difference with spheres to clean up some parts, and so on. A few volume VOPs to apply some noise pattern. Second pic is, let's call it, "base mesh". Edited November 26, 2014 by amm

kleer001
I'd love to hear about resolutions and conversion times. Also, looks really cool!
amm
Here is hiplc file, just replaced the input meshes by triangulated ones, just an superstitious protection of my own modeling methods. Should look the same. Regarding resolution, this seems to be maximum, able to fit in 8 gigs of my home machine, on windows.Equivalent of 1.5 millimeter in real world, for one voxel. Around 1 minute for meshing, using quad core i5. Still it was able to render directly, by enabling VDB to convert only for rendering. michael
had a look through the file - very cool a next step would be to have this effect on a moving character
Diego A Grimaldi
I havent yet checked the file but I'm assuming that would be crazy intensive to rebuild Michael. Hope I'm wrong though
michael
nah...the vops take a bit to cook - but not much more than a few mins (depending on the density)... just throw it on the farm overnight
