I don't think it was done in Houdini, they use a lot of 3DSMax, so you won't find a HIP file laying around. There was a review online that I can no longer find but they never really revealed how they exactly did it other than via a Maxscript. I think they created a bone for every face along the longest length of the triangle and then scaled the bones from 0 to 1 as they rotated the bone into it's final resting place. The script that did the automatic keyframing sorted the triangles based upon z-depth that way the one farther away unfolded first so the object appeared from front to back.
