sibarrick
Anyone know how big the rendefarm used by CORE on The Wild is? Or is the sort of stuff an industry secret. Cheers
thekenny
http://www.top500.org/site/2438 I found this on the net, so technically I didn't give away any "secret" here. You could also look for blue arc servers... we use them as well. -k
Marc
odd that... we rank higher than you, but you have mucho more procs than us? http://www.top500.org/site/1612 weird
thekenny
i dunno... we were higher at one point something like 85 ... I'm not sure how they measure the ranks... I know we can get a lot done if we have to, which is nice -k odd that... we rank higher than you, but you have mucho more procs than us?http://www.top500.org/site/1612 weird 24039

Jason
Cheers very useful. 24059 Surely you guys have more than 500/1000 cpus?? We're a fraction of your size and have minimum 900 and overnight the locals go online and we hit up way over 1300. Sure you guys don't have a secret iPod renderfarm?
thekenny
that is just the linux based farm. doesn't count workstations or the mac farm unless, of course, systems aren't "telling" me the truth. -k
keltuzar
I have a stupid question: in the future if some calculations are runned on the gpu proc too wouldnt that make all these servers slower?
sibarrick
Ha, 900 we have 12! At night it goes up to 21! Not sure if that qualifies as a farm though, they are more like pets.

I'm interested in this at the moment because we might have to do a rather large render and I wanted to know what was a "practical" or "typical" sized renderfarm. Then calculate from that how long it might take. From that nice link I notice that anywhere between 200-1000 procs is pretty normal.
michael
keep in mind things like: # of licenses for houdini/prman etc bandwidth between filers and the nodes etc
sibarrick
Well one of the nice things about Houdini is the number of free render licenses you get...... it would definately be a Mantra render.
