Pearl
I'm trying to take a still of Niagara Falls and make it come to life. However, this has become quite a challenging project for a newbie! I've worked on the water falling and the steam. This is what I've got so far: May 12th http://www.pearlhsu.net/videos/niagara05s.mov May 10th http://www.pearlhsu.net/videos/niagara04s.mov I'm using i3d for the steam clouds, but the render times are really slowing things down. Right now I'm around 30 minutes per frame. I'd really appreciate any suggestions on how to reduce render times. Next, I'm going to tackle the water. I feel that this will be the most tricky. Especially since I'm going into it with no knowledge about making water in Houdini. Any suggestions or critiques (or trade secrets? ) are totally welcome! Visual Cortex Lab
I like it ... the water is a bit... too "linear".. but I'm now willing to make some water tests myself as well after seeying all your results (another post about water has been posted recently.. which is also really nice) good! cheers. Andz
Whater falls look really good. But the steam on the front looks a bit brown or yellow to me. And as for the scale, I'd make the falls a bit slower.
Pearl
I'll work on the steam some more. It's proving to be quite tricky. (Grrr render time!!!) Thanks for the note on the water speed. It's been bugging me but I didn't know if it was still too fast.
michael
my folks live in Niagra Falls... having been there a few times I can tell you that the actual 'rim' is very uneven... but it looks good so far!
edward
An alternative for the mist might be to use particles with noisy spheres.
Pearl
Hey arctor... I know It's actually 2 major arcs with lots of bumps in between, but I found out after I rendered. Maybe I'll fix it after I get the mechanics down. An alternative for the mist might be to use particles with noisy spheres. I'm on it! stevenong
Yep, the speed of the water is too fast. Try slowing it down by at least a factor of 10 or more. As for the mist, you can also try sprites which works almost the same as spheres. Good luck! Cheers! steven
lynbo
Really nice work so far Pearl If you breakup the water motion a bit it would help alot. Keep at it.
Pearl
Slowed down the water speed a bit and changed the color of the waterfall to look more varied. But, I only did these in post (for the time being), so it's not a drastic change. I played with the color of the mist after the comment about it being brownish. Also, I took edward's suggestion about noisy spheres and rendered a new layer of mist. This bring the look closer to my reference. Yay! Thanks, edward! http://www.pearlhsu.net/videos/niagara05s.mov Now that the fixes are mostly out of the way... I have no choice but to move onto the horizontal water. Yikes. No idea where to start.
