Marc
I've seen it and I have to say that it's one of the better CG movies I've seen in a while. It certainly went a long way to washing out the bad taste left in my mouth by Happy Feet.. (and no, I didn't work on it) If you like the recent bunch of surfing/skating documentaries then I think you'll enjoy it. M

TheUsualAlex
I saw surf's up and love it. Probably one of the best animated feature done by Sony to date, IMHO. The kids that came saw it with me loved it too.
Jason
I've just gotten home from seeing Surf's Up and I must tell you that I'm very impressed with nearly all aspects of this movie, the character animation, the effects animation, the rendering, the script - all very very good. What a cool movie! Well done you guys!
Daniel
Thanks Jason. I can safely say that Surf's Up is the film I'm most proud to have worked on on so many levels, it's disappointing to see that it's getting lost among the summer blockbusters. The critic's and those that have seen it seem to really appreciate the freshness, but that doesn't seem to be translating into many ticket sales Daniel
Alexander Weide
that's encouraging...I still haven't seen Spiderman 3 Watch it, the birthsequence of the sandman is amazing. The Sand is so realistic, sometimes i can't believe it, thats all CG. i thought Renderman and Houdini.
keltuzar
What is really amazing is imageworks doing not only visual effects but also pulling 3d animated features; that is some feat to reckon with. I still have to see this movie, people have been raving about it.

I enjoyed some of the visual decisions; particularly making the finale occur on an ominous overcast day. C'mon Daniel lets make the next show in a solely Houdini-based pipeline and have some fun eh? Daniel
It's amazing how many scenes are direct lifts from Endless Summer, Step Into Liquid and, my personal favourite, Blue Crush but still maintain a really good look. Yup, We studied all those films. We actually had Jean-Paul Beeghly (the Cinematographer and Producer of Step Into Liquid) come by and lecture about filming techniques etc. that were used on that film. I enjoyed some of the visual decisions; particularly making the finale occur on an ominous overcast day. C'mon Daniel lets make the next show in a solely Houdini-based pipeline and have some fun eh? The art direction was really great and created a lot of looks throughout the film for the water and env. All Houdini eh? Haha, I don't think I'll be signing up for that one, I love Houdini as much as the next guy.. but there are limits. Houdini was used extensively on this film and it was a pleasure to work with and develop in for sure. The main wave rig had to be done in Maya as the front end of our pipeline is wrapped around it. Does DD char animate in Houdini??? We don't even use manta, which is a shame I guess.. your hints about H9 have me intrigued. Daniel

That must've been pretty interesting to hear about, yeah. All Houdini eh? Haha, I don't think I'll be signing up for that one, I love Houdini as much as the next guy.. but there are limits. Does DD char animate in Houdini??? We don't even use manta, which is a shame I guess.. your hints about H9 have me intrigued. We don't, no, not for animation. We've never had a feature animation or anything large enough to take such a plunge. It's obviously possible to do but I'm sure it'd take some real work to pull it off on anything less than a feature animation. Mantra is sizing up to be a significant piece of technology - with a pretty easy interface (IFDs are not rocket science), and Houdini 9's lighting tools are pretty damn strong. Really worth a gander, IMHO - which might be more appropriate for Sony than delving into the character side of Houdini. Are you moving onto any new (announced) projects yet? Or are you still recovering from the thralls of production?
Daniel
Are you moving onto any new (announced) projects yet? Or are you still recovering from the thralls of production? Both actually, I'll finally be taking a vacation in a couple of months and hopefully see some real waves. Most of the Surf's Up team are moving over to another Feature Anim Project, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and I'll be on that one too. There was actually overlap between the two projects which has made it a bit hairy. I think it's been announced.. yea looking around the net there have been some press releases for upcoming feature projects. http://www.bcdb.com/cartoon/59132-Cloudy_w..._Meatballs.html There are probably better write ups somewhere. What a cool movie! Well done you guys! Yep, I'm really proud of it too, had a blast working on it despite the seemingly endless visions of palm trees and foliage dancing through my dreams last year ... We had an excellent effects team on the show, I had a great time working with them, outstanding group of people to be sure! --Mark
edward
Are there any SIGGRAPH sketches this year from Sony that talk about Houdini's use? If there are, I wouldn't want to miss them.

Yes, I know that Tom Kluyskens and Debbie Carlson were preparing presentations on various water/surf effects, maybe Matt Hausman and Daniel Kramer will as well, not sure of details. --Mark
Daniel
Are there any SIGGRAPH sketches this year from Sony that talk about Houdini's use? If there are, I wouldn't want to miss them. Yes as Mark said there will be a few: Go With The Flow Thursday, 9 August 3:45 - 6 pm Room 6DE 1/2 Day Course "Surf's Up": The Making of an Animated Documentary Monday Half-Day, 8:30 am - 12:15 pm Level: Beginning Room 1AB The Electronic Theater will also have a couple min piece showing off some of the work. I'll be speaking at the 1/2 day course along with Matt Hausman, Rob Bredow, Danny Dimian, and David Schaub. This will be an overview of the whole pipeline. I'll be focusing on development of the wave rig, showing some early tests, and how we built our wave pipeline, some of our pre-visulization tools to verify we had good wave animation.. mostly the work to get the rig in the hands of the animators.. that includes mostly Maya work (though pretty much everything was built with custom plugins wired in a very "Houdini" like manner). Matt Hausman will mostly be talking about the Houdini side of processing the wave geometry for lighting and executing/designing wave effects systems (whitewater, lip spray.. etc)... at least that's what I think we'll be talking about I still have a lot of work to do on my sides.. we finished up our course notes at least. There will be lots of great talks by the Spiderman guys showing off a lot of new systems built specifically for that show as well.
