Monster House Render Software

IIRC the renderer used on MH was a highly modified version of arnold...

I think there is a thread around somewhere about it...

from Jason:

Marcos, the author, sells Arnold as a library to companies - and also a skinny standalone using the library. The major intention is for people to be able to embed Arnold into their existing software easily. It is a blazingly fast raytracer but IMO for feature work it really needs to be shouldered by a team of programmers on the client side (like Sony did for Monster House 3D, a look for which the product was just made to do). For software developers like AutoCAD or whatever that need a mid-level renderer to show off their models, it's a great thing.

no motion blur

Actually it does have Motion Blur but based on style considerations it wasn't used (wanted a stop motion feel). I didn't work on the project but I'm sure that slow render times helped to drive the style choice as well. Since that time the developers have improved the quality/speed of motion blur in Arnold significantly

From what i remember PMG's Messiah has a render engine that is based on Arnold...

*there is a dark story about Messiah and Arnold but having not much knowledge i just mention the connection and leave the details for others . . :)*

Off topic :

"..imo not using MB for helped the look but i believe that using mocap was a serious error...

stop motion is by default hand animated...so lacking control on that part was something that

made me frown.. :) "

cheers

  • 1 year later...

I was under the impression that Sony bought it lock, stock and barrel. Perhaps I was wrong :).

As far as I know it's being used on Cloudy and has been massively improved to cope with the demands of such a huge show. Perhaps Dan can chime in with some more tidbits.

Sony bought the source code but Marcos is still free to sell the software. There are specifics and limitations that I won't go into here about that deal (partly because I don't know all the details and don't want to compromise any confidence)

Yes, Cloudy was rendered completely in Arnold (sans some efx elements) which has now become our in-house renderer. We've got a team of very talented software engineers who have dedicated themselves to making Arnold production ready. Lighting the movie with Arnold was a pleasure and it would be very difficult to go back to a scanline renderer at this point.

Features like hair and motion blur have been greatly improved over the course of Cloudy.

I think that's enough :) . Clears up some questions I had.

It's cool to hear that it worked out well. I think it's such a shift away from renderman that it could well have been a completely different story :) . Cloudy looks absolutely amazing though, so it's obviously done a great job.

Yeah, I totally missed that link :D

Anyway, I still would like to see how Mantra PBR performs on tasks like that, might be interesting

thanks Marc

Hey varomix, I haven't used Houdini in ages. How about a group project?

We could try to recreate the lighthouse scene and upload it here so every one can give it a try tweaking mantra to render this. And critique our modeling skilz  of course!

That sounds great, count me in, this would be nice to get more experience with PBR, and learn from some masters out there.

Let's Do it!!

I found the finish piece here http://wurp.cgsociety.org/gallery/
