Marc
Welcome to the first official od[force] FX Challenge. House of Cards Your quest: To recreate one of the three complex structures similar to the ones seen here : http://www.adobecards.com/ , out of cards. For this challenge there are two entry levels; Apprentice and Master. Each challenge level will be voted on by your peers and the winners will receive the recognition they richly deserve as well as a small icon/logo to be displayed proudly wherever they want (and in their profile). Apprentice Level: Build one of the structures out of cards. The cards should not visibly intersect. Bonus points will be awarded for complexity of the construction. Master Level: The master level includes the Apprentice level plus : Build it up or break it down. Choose a dramatic and compelling method of building the construction, or destroying it. You can choose to do either one (or both if you so desire). Cards should not visibly intersect at any point during the animation. Bonus points will be awarded for the complexity of the construction and the sim. Rules: You may do this however you want. Hand crafted, particles, RBD, whatever.. as long as it's built in Houdini Hipfiles must accompany the final submission. No, you may not use anything created prior to the start of the challenge WIP's are very much encouraged ( and by that, we mean only slightly below mandatory), and should be posted with a title following this format : "Challenge 1 - House of Cards (apprentice/master): <name>, <title of anim>" -- NOTE : WIP THREADS ARE NOW MANDATORY. Only challengers who follow the rules will be entered into the final vote. The format for the final entry should consist of a movie and a hipfile. Stills will be accepted only for the apprentice challenge. The contest ends one month from today. 28th of March is the cutoff date for entries. Potentially frequently asked questions : Q: "oh man, I want to do something.. but a boat, a bridge and a castle? Can't I do anything else?" A: No! ... ok fine, you caught us. Yes you may choose another structure, but it has to follow along in the same theme. No spaceships, skyscrapers, cars or any modern amenity. We'll save those for another challenge. Also, your boat, bridge or castle need not be those specific ones. You may choose any of the myriad types in those themes (just no steamships, destroyers or submarines, ok?) Think victorian era tech. Maybe some of you might be kind enough to post up some of you files so that I can use them to learn maybe? Or maybe just tell me the basic of how I can do something like this. michael
6. The format for the final entry should consist of a movie and a hipfile. that's the whole point of these challenges and the ones we've had in the past...to show off our smarts and to help other people see different approaches to projects/problems

Marc
The apprentice version of the challenge is not much more than some fancy copy SOP techniques. I'll see if I can whip up a basic version this weekend and post it as a guide. M

Marc
Here you go. It's pretty basic and I didn't do the tricky parts (like the corners ), but most of the techniques that you would need to do something more complex are in there. Hopefully this gives you a good place to start. card_example_v1.hip Cheers Marc

maharzan
so is there anyway we can offset and overlap these copies? Sorry I am totally new to houdini.
Marc
Yip, basically the cards are copied 1 to a point and aligned using the normal and up vector. So if you want cards to overlap then you need to add more points. Offsetting them can occur in the copy SOP itself or by moving the template points. Rvb
Going to give it a try, my first project in Houdini! ready to gain some knowledge But I have one small question. Have the card to appear animated and than form a bridge, ship or structure?
Marc
Hey all I've just updated the rules. If you're entering then you need to create a WIP thread and show us something as you go. Any entries without a WIP thread at the end won't be accepted. The purpose of this is to learn and be inspired, so don't be shy . M
Marc
The apprentice level only requires a completed structure. The master level is where you can either animate it building up or breaking down...
