Stremik
Geforce FX 5200 128MB DDR Video Card Anyone had experience running Houdini with this card? I'm going to upgrade my wife's computer and I thought that I'd give her the one I'm using right now (Radeon 8500. It's going to be more than enough for checking email.) and for myself get something better tailored for Houdini.
stevenong
Hey Stremik, Houdini pretty much flies with the card. Then again, it's still considered a gaming card so I would say don't expect too much. I can't remember did I try it with Windows but it is pretty stable with Linux. I hope the above helps! Cheers! steven
Stremik
Yea, I realize that. I guess the only thing I care about at this point , whether it is going to be better or not (more stable/faster, especially GUIwise) than my glitchy Radeon? anakin78z
well, I still have a painfully slow interface with mine, and I couldn't get that doubble buffer fix to make it any better.... but I'm gonna download newer drivers today... we'll see if that does anything. lynbo
Go with Nvidia possibly (depending on budget) quadro 740 XGL or 900XGL. These have been out for a bit and might be more affordable now. As for ease and performance these are excellent. They don't quite fly like a new FX type but they are really good.

TheDunadan
I couldn't check yet with linux, but i recently installed my pc with win2k3 and it has a radeon 9800pro and first I was fairly disappointed about the openGl performance; however after patchting the radeon into a fireglx2 the openGL performance was really impressive. I suppose similar might apply for geforce cards but the speed boost was really most impressive with the ati one. It outperformed the oldish wildcat III card by far.
