varomix
Hi Guys I just did a new training tutorial, this time on doing and ink in water effect, looks really cool and there's a bunch of great info there hope you like it Thank you cmiVFX Releases Brand New Houdini INK FX Ultra Class Video The Leaders In High End Video Training For The Visual Effects Industry Princeton, NJ (July 7th, 2014) New for this season, cmiVFX brings you a brand new and improved Houdini INK FX system. The Ink In Water effect is a classic amongst artists and scientists alike. Usually, the definition of Ink In Water is pretty self explanatory, however this time we will show you the easiest way for Houdini to tackle this effect. The truth, as we like to call a well done effect, is something that each person can master on their own personal style, yet Houdini can assist with this uniqueness due to the amount of data it can handle. Come see how awesome the power of Houdini really is while finally learning a very popular, and commercially viable effect shot. Short DescriptionHoudini is no stranger to rendering large amounts of geometry, there for, the ink in water effect that we are going to develop will yield about about 27 million particles without skipping a beat. Naturally, Houdini can handle even more and you will learn how to deal with such large amounts of geometry even if you do not have the best computer resources at your disposal. kleer001
Ooo, looks cool! One quick question. Why use particles instead of advecting points?
Solitude
Particles are just points, and they are indeed advected by a pyro sim by the looks of it.
varomix
yes, I'm advecting particle points
kleer001
Particles are just points, and they are indeed advected by a pyro sim by the looks of it. To me they're different, technically and pedantically speaking. All particles are points, but not all points are particles. Points are created arbitrarily. Particles are emitted. Points have whatever attributes you make them have. Particles come with a slew of attributes like age, life, pprevious, and velocity. And the more you do with particles the more attributes they get like hituv, hitprim, etc... Sure you can do waaaay more with particles, like collide them. All I'm saying is that using the VDB advect points might be a little faster than DOPs.

kleer001
Is this the advertising? Kinda, it's also a little bit of bragging and a little bit of rallying around an odForce member doing good work in getting the word out there, getting the knowledge out there. The community is so small I feel none of us are really upset when a new pay-tutorial is announced here. Personally I'm not a fan of CMi-vfx, but I think they should get plenty of exposure for people that do like them.
michael
as far as I'm concerned (and I think I can speak for Marc and Jason on this)... since there are so few third party tutorials for Houdini, having a post here to let Houdini users know about a new one isn't a big deal, and we (odforce.net) are not a commercial operation, selling our own tutorials etc, so there is no real conflict. as for cmiVFX, I like much of what they do...and their prices are pretty reasonable...I'd prefer to download videos and sometimes the voice over can be a little hard to understand...but otherwise there is some good stuff there... ideally we should be posting this the the front page...but none of use seem to have the time to do this at the moment.
Guest tar
It may be best not to read too much into amir7500 posts. They are as deep as they are brief Click on 'Posts' in: http://forums.odforce.net/user/12077-amir7500/?tab=posts Edited September 10, 2014 by tar
