Disintegrating Sand

I think the first problem you're going to need to address is how to render that volume of sand. If you've done that then the actual sim might not be too difficult.

It all kinda depends on how you'll be rendering the sand though. A particle sand solution would be very different from a surface solution.

I think I need both. But for the beginning I'll stick with solid volumes.

Yeah, Frank said it all. You will need some sort of fluid sim.

Try RealSlow ... errr i mean RealFlow. I think it will help you ... slow :)

There is another liquid thing for Maya and MAX - Glu3D - it has an option to automaticly fill objects with liquid, then just turn off the collision and you will have your effect. It is pretty buggy, but should be ok for your castle.
