Thomas Helzle
Hey Wout, thanks a lot! :-) I was away from 3D for a year and only start coming back now, but concentrating more on real-world-design ATM using Rhino - which thankfully now got SubDs... :-) But I did this a while ago in my old Houdini 16.5 and older Redshift, the second image with Octane 4: "Sine Waves" This was a re-visit of my custom "Threader", improving it some more on the way. Thomas Helzle
Reusing some older Differential Line Growth setups for 3D Printing: Got a Creality Ender 3 Pro for a recent project to create prototypes for several designs we're working on. Updated it quite a bit to be silent and more convenient to use. Last week I finally had some time for my own stuff and tried out some generative things for lampshades. Created the wiggly lines in Houdini, exported as NURBS curves (IGES) to Rhino 7 and did the loft there as NURBS. Sliced the resulting STL in Simplify3D and printed it in glow-in-the-dark (blue) translucent PLA+ Learning and exploring a lot ATM, love to be finally able to bring virtual stuff back into the real world... Fun :-) Cheers, Tom

Sorry, didn't see your reply ;-) This one took something like 16 hours, filling the maximum size of the printer. It's relatively fast to print, since it's only one layer thick with a 0.4mm nozzle. In the middle the structure became rather wobbly and I was amazed that it printed so well until the end. Sadly, the finished lamp doesn't look as cool as the start of the print, since you can no longer see the internal structure, only the folds. So it's live and learn... ;-) Cheers, Tom

GO! Houdini, Redshift, Luminar 2018 Cheers, Tom Hi Tom, Can you tell me what setup do use to make this?
Thomas Helzle
Yes, I can tell you about the core principle of these organics: Create an interesting structure of lines (this is the main work). (Optionally run a resample node over them, if they do not have enough points to make the following nodes create something interesting) Run a "Connect adjacent points" node on that structure, adjust parameters to taste. Next run a strong "Smooth" node over it, again, adjust to taste. Render as strands/hair. Then you listen into yourself what comes up while looking at it. You write that down. Good luck ;-) Cheers, Tom Edited June 23, 2021 by Thomas Helzle
