magneto
Yes I noticed they added a new node editor to Maya 2013. I wasn't keeping up with their new features, but it does look like that's the direction they are going.

georgeivan
Just a new guy in Houdini, the buy looks more like fear from AD,Houdini its used more and more, its just a matter of time. Imho Sidefx have tons of money at his hands,i mean big potential money,Maya its old and its going nowere, they keep adding crap,Xsi sadly its dead, how they can compete with Houdini?adding ice??slaping Naiad on top?Ice its very good,so Naiad but again Ad slap things, they will make a freaking frankestein (if they do that) Im just learning Houdini,i come from max, maya then Xsi but the few things i learned this day convinced me that this piece of gold will make mi life easier than before. Just looking at the pyro stuff ...im in love.Wish the solver could be fast as Naiad but maybe its just a matter of time.

NSugleris
It is. I swear Naiad would handle the larger ocean body sims a bit faster... I'd ask Igor . I for one really miss Naiad but 12.5's flip solver is nothing short of incredible
Sifis
Have you guys seen this? Not sure why they position XSI for particles only. It should be at the same place as Max/Maya in the chart. http://autode.sk/PSfYsE That's sad, XSI is a great software, much better than maya in many aspects (not just particles) in my opinion. Looking at this now I'm very pleased I chose Houdini and didn't stick with XSI when I was researching for a more procedural approach to 3d. BTW what the hell 3ds max is doing at the center of the chart? Edited March 22, 2013 by Sifis
magneto
I agree, XSI is a solid all around app. In fact if Autodesk didn't buy it, it would have been a good competitor. They are doing the development in Singapore I think so not going to be any better. Max is at the center because Max and Maya are still Autodesk's general purpose 3d apps, even if they focus on different markets. XSI not so much. Yes but the central purple circle reads "Areas of excellence". In which area (not counting the countless plugins) max is excellent?
magneto
I think that's more of jack of all, master of none kind of excellence But you know many job descriptions using Max for FX, also lists a ton of plugins like TP, Afterburn, FumeFX, etc.
symek
The biggest asset of Max is its user base. Pretty much the best cg artists around sit at 3dsMax. This is what they meant by excellence I presume...
magneto
I actually wonder how many Houdini users are there compared to Max? I know we were told there were 250k Max users (paid) on private betas several years ago. Recently I heard figures like 400k, but not sure if that's legit. Adam T
Hard to pinpoint as there are two flavours of Max (god knows why...they should add an extra D to AD). There was this quote from last year from Chris Vienneau at AD : "Max has hundreds of thousands of users and 3dsmax Design is now part of most every Autodesk design suite and there you are talking millions of users." Which is confusing .. I guess they mean there are hundreds of thousands of individual users... mostly the arch viz crowd? Who no doubt aren't interested in MotionBuilder and Mudbox, hmm. Re the chart, I think it represents Autodesk's modus operandi quite nicely. It's a profit chart: Deep purple = $$$, and the outlying regions are things they've bought up that they don't know what to do with; but they pay for milk, coffee and the odd charter flight so they keep them around. Has anyone seen this? Might be of interest to Naiad and Max users http://www.maxunderg...e_of_naiad.html That's not too surprising. Max is in a real mess and it's going to get a lot worse the deeper they dig into the legacy code. It all started when they changed over to unicode - I think they discovered that it wasn't very well put together in the first place.
