Netvudu
I realized a strange behaviour in most Houdini forums, specially on this one. Whenever any Maya user comes and starts learning Houdini and wants to ask for help , they always start with "I already know my way pretty well through Maya..." or "I´m already a Maya expert" or any variation of this. I find it sort of funny, and recently mildly annoying, specially since this only happens with Maya users, not with other 3d packages. Lightwave, Softimage, Cinema 4D, Blender or MAX users don´t seem to show the same behaviour. Is there anything special on Maya I´m missing? I mean, when I started learning Houdini I had about 10 years of experience on CG already, and I didn´t make a rundown of the software that I can work with (which does include Maya, even if I didn´t tell everybody around here) before asking questions. Do they feel so bad about being newcomers to a software that they have to state they already know something or what? Just wondering...
Andz
Maybe he/they are just trying to say that are not new to 3D. And the reference to a software could help others who might know the same software to try to explain something in a different workflow or tool names... just like a translation. I mentioned 3dsMax when I first introduced my self here with a few questions, although that didn't help much because there weren't many ex-max users around at the time, so I had to search for proper CG names for what I needed and not just the tools names that were common in Max back then. Alexander Weide
I can say you are right. I am 3d User since my twelfe birthday. Nearly 15 years. I have worked with maya with 3dsmax cinema4d and lightwave in the past years. And my experience is that alot of Maya or 3dsmax users are think their software is best for everything. And i think its very funny. In Germany some of the clients think you cannot do the job without using 3dsmax.?!? Thats bullshit and i think its one of the main reasons that some guys think they have to use this software or not. I am now working with Blender as my Main Software. I think the new renderengine Cylces in Blender is raising the bar alot, so i combine it with Houdini and thats my way. And everyone who think's that this or that is the best solution for every job fails alot and will not be at the market for long time. cheers;)
lukeiamyourfather
Whenever learning new software and asking questions on a forum I typically say what software I have used in the past. It sometimes helps people who respond to the questions if they also use both softwares. For example "feature X in Maya is like feature Y in Houdini" and the like. That isn't always the case but that's one good reason. What Andz said about saying "I'm not new to 3D, just to Houdini" is a good reason too. You seem to have a lot of hostility towards Maya users. Did you have a bad experience with Maya? Is there something you want to share?

mangi
We use xsi for the pocoyo TV series with arnold render, since 2004, really hard to chang to any 3d app, The maya guys really say these thing like you mention. about xsi and in maya .we call xsi THE DINOSAUR. It was kind of popular in spain for productions years ago. I was introduced to houdini some time ago in 2006 one sidefx brought out the houdini 9 version botton etc... Still cracking at it. been doing image stuff for the past 25 years, seen it all and tryed about everyting. I think you can't compare programs especially on a forum like odforce and say maya this and maya that. Houdini is just really different. mangi Edited April 19, 2012 by mangi
Netvudu
You seem to have a lot of hostility towards Maya users. Did you have a bad experience with Maya? Is there something you want to share? Yes...I hate Autodesk But apart from that, I don´t have anything against Maya. I do have a lot against software fanatics...Maya seems to have a lot of ´em. Alexander Weide
Yes...I hate Autodesk But apart from that, I don´t have anything against Maya. I do have a lot against software fanatics...Maya seems to have a lot of ´em. I dont wanna say hate, but Autodesk is getting something bad in the last years, they buy every software, they do everything to get full power over the 3d marked and that is bad for development of new technologies. I went away from all autodesk products because every release got more and more bugs since the one before. Now iam using Blender and Cylces and Houdini and believe that it was a big mistake to use a autodesk product in the past.
zarti
.. . Now iam using Blender and Cylces and Houdini .. me too . since i own ESC im trying to complement some features of MASTER with Blender ( when those are needed , oc ) . -- about AD : i* have heard a lot of ' non-good-things ' about them , but even so their products are very widely used today . so , without going too deep .. there seems to be a problem , obviously . and i doubt that 's from users part . =) it never is . -- about the TOPIC : i , personally , do not feel ' so bad ' when someone say at the beginning of his / her post : " Hi , i come from Z app , .. " . if( Z == $AD_PRODUCT, PERFECT, NICE ) . so , more Mayans and more experienced new members , better it is . or not ? =) i want to see this community grow as much as possible . more brains . more ideas . more willing to share . .. less topics like this -- now .. beeeeer for everyone ! -- * - i own only Sketchbook and have been tempted to get Mudbox , but got 3DCoat instead . =P

mangi
Hi there , just another comment I came across this example looking for render position, I see that the big guys ask for several 3d packs for the same position. Also in render, They do say it´s a bonus (here is what I mean) Well this is for lighting , maybe they are in a different ball game, besides what dose NUKE have to do with that it´s not even 3d But of cource if you have KATANA , thats kind of 3d Also from some movie from sony I asked one of the engineer of render how they made some of the stuff and mention that animation was maya and the trees where houdini. Maybe we should think about the bonus, Actually it´s not really to hard to know more then one 3d pack , as long as you just remember what hot keys you use and not use the hot keys from one pack in the other pack, It won´t work mangi Edited April 21, 2012 by mangi
Marc
Hey I know Houdini... and that's it. So what's the point of this thread again?
Netvudu
None Marc. As you can read in my title description it´s just a rant and there´s nothing relevant in here
