dyei nightmare
im kinda bored, what i we make a new houdini challenge?! i dunno in your country but these days we have a lot of free time these days, and i feel kinda "cocky" latelly to test some skills... hehe so lets make a new challenge even without prices, just for fun!, what da ya think? edit: could be something about a final render or art, and not about a specific houdini feature, because not everybody has houdini 13 running well yet Edited April 16, 2014 by dyei nightmare
Sierra62
Sounds fun, might be interesting to do something with regards to abstract art. I think a lot spend most of our days blowing stuff up or doing other dynamic simulations. It might be cool to get away from the usual Houdini effects.

Skybar
We could have some type of a monthly challenge, that runs for a month each. I'm guessing people don't really have the time to set up something big, so I'm thinking that someone creates a thread in the Challenge-forum with a monthly theme and all who wants to participate simply writes in that thread. The themes can be very simple, like "Fire", or a bit more descriptive like "melting FLIP bunnies on fire".
Sierra62
That's a great idea Skybar.
abvfx
Personally i would love to see a contest showcasing some of the aspects where other apps struggle. More specifically a shader contest or a deformer contest. We all love fire, rbd, smoke and fluid sims but it's the area that gets the most attention. I would love to see more of the other elements of Houdini. How far can you push CHOPS, COPS, VEX, Character rigging, Mantra. Again, my personal selfish opinion.
sebkaine
Agreed Andrew, especially Character Rigging ... it's really on my top priority list ! it really looks that H could be a perfect animation tool ! This would be a good challenge for ex ... replicate this rig in H Cheers E

Yes, my idea can be very specific as well, like "create a gold shader" or "recreate this rig in houdini" or something. For this to really quick off I think the time investment for the one who creates the challenge shouldn't be too big. And with the rotation of one theme per month the turnaround is pretty quick and people can join in whenever they feel like it (or have the time).
JonathanGranskg
I would also love to see something different from the usual FX stuff. I definitely support this challenge concept Edited April 17, 2014 by JonathanGranskg
Guest tar
This may take too long for a monthly theme; creating consistently clean extruded & beveled Illustrator or FontSops without converting to polygons
eetu
And, of course it would be mandatory to give out the .hips of all entries! I'm all for this, although some of the ideas do sound like they would be quite a bit of work..
abvfx
And, of course it would be mandatory to give out the .hips of all entries! While i would love that, i think it is a little bit forceful. If you publish content online using services like youtube or vimeo you would like to retain the right of ownership. I don't think it would be fair to enforce such a rule that basically takes any ownership of the participant. If the people entering want to do that then of course it would be awesome. But i think that decision should reside with the user. The Houdini community is very much one of sharing knowledge and i love that, especially since none of us are forced to. We do it because we have been helped in the past or simply because we want to. If someone wants to earn money from their efforts by taking something they made in a contest, working on it some more and publishing it on orbolt then they should be allowed to. You yourself do some great work in that lab thread and you share your hip files. That is awesome because you chose to, not because it is a forum stipulation. I would never look down or have a negative view of someone if they wanted to keep their files for any reason.
eetu
I feel the requirement of sharing the hip files fits the point of this forum nicely. Either way is fine by me, I guess whomever starts running these has the final call. If you take a look at the challenge archives, all the previous challenges have had this hip file rule.
Sierra62
ABVFX, I totally agree. Having to share hip files may be to extreme, it could discourage some people entering the challenge. So to get these challenges started, how are we going to choose what the challenge will be? Do a poll? or have the winner of the the previous challenge pick the next one? JonathanGranskg
...And how will the winner be chosen? Poll or judges?
Sierra62
A poll would work better at having the odforce community involved.
Guest tar
I would never look down or have a negative view of someone if they wanted to keep their files for any reason. That's totally true. The workflow is incredible important, more significant than the end results. Efficiency and technique are the most interesting part of any project, kudos be to the sharer of .hips!
