What is the best distribution for Houdini, nuke and maya?

If you're using Maya then you're limited to RHEL 7 or CentOS 7 for now. They're not great...

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-Autodesk-Maya-2020.html

There are ways to install it on other distributions but if you're new to Linux, I don't recommend going down that road as an introduction to Linux. If you drop Maya from that list then you have a lot more options like Ubuntu and any Ubuntu derivatives like Linux Mint. I would go with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS or 20.04 LTS assuming there's no Maya.

Yeah Maya is the real exception here, A pain to set up on a distro that Autodesk doesn't officially support.

Houdini works fine on any distro

I'm not sure about nuke.

The annoying thing is that it's not the trickiest issue to fix, especially nowerdays with systems like flatpak that allow deploying to every distro in one, it's just autodesk being autodesk tbh.

I would also add Manjaro into the mix as a great option.

linux mint

Mint doesn’t support Gnome anymore. Which makes it not an option anyway.

Anyone tried Pop? https://pop.system76.com/

Has been using Pop since December. Nuke and Houdini runs well. But you have to say good buy to Mocha, Maya, Renderman and some other things. It’s possible, sure, but too much hassle.
Rocky and Alma (and RHEL itself) are gonna be the distros of choice for studios for years to come.

I recommend instandos.
And using the aur to setup maya.

Might have problems with some renderers though

ignore this arch based distro`s are terrible for this perpose,
User RHEL based systems preferably 9+ as omniverse tends to require 9+

FWIW, I've been using Pop for a couple of months now. Not doing any Maya or Renderman, so not sure if those are still an issue.

But H19 + Nuke + Blender + Resolve + Substance (via Steam) are working super well.

It's really grown on me as an OS

Houdini and Nuke works on most distros but Maya is the problem. It works out of box on RHEL7 but not friendly to any other.
I recall it was libcrypto libssl related issues.

My suggestion : get Centos7 if you do not want any hassle. Otherwise, get any distros that suits you and install Windows on other drive for Maya and Renderman.
