FrankFirsching
Very nice! And a very courageous move to include the comment of Steve Williams (I also liked the statement "It's a fact" ;-) But during the whole reel I waited for some images of the core feature. It's pretty mean to include the interviews about the film, but not to show it. (no complaints here, I understand this, but it would have been the icing on the cake)
TheUsualAlex
Sweetness! This year's reel is definitely much better than any of the previous years I've seen thus far. Kudos, SESI! -Alex
michael
yeah Steve really hated the fact that we were using Houdini...but he's come around after seeing the work we've done... SESI did lots of interviews here...but no one can show anything from The Wild until Disney gives the word.... won't be long now...

Rafal123
I'm disappointed. First: Music sucks. Second: I saw on Wiki many, many movies where Houdini was used. I thought I'll see all these, like "Enemy at the gates" , "Catch me if You can", "Beautiful mind". I don't care about fx movies. Movies are not about VFX! Look at "Beautiful mind", this movie is very good and there are some some sweet FXs implemented. To SideFX: I don't care about fire and explosions in Stealth(which takes too much part of reel), I don't care about funny animations made by guys from SavannahCollege. I would like to see how Houdini was used in more ambitius movies like: "Behind enemy lines", "Apollo 13", "AI", "Big Fish", "Catch me if you can", "LOTR", "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". Is that really so hard? Is this reel for: "look dude this is awsome" guys who are not interested in REAL movies? Please think about it. michael
I see it as a 2005 Demo Reel...not as a Houdini Show Reel...

eloop
I for one was happy to have a demo reel that isn't bland techno for a change. You have to understand, this a demo reel for a piece of software, not the movies it was used on. So just concentrate on the images and think about how houdini might have been used to generate them better, faster, cheaper. I bet a lot of the fx people that work on these movies don't rush out to see them, they most likely have better taste in movies than you do. Think about it. Also, I wonder how easy it is to get clearance to use movie clips for advertising purposes. Perhaps this also impacts what ends up in advertising material. As for the houdini/maya comparison, I thought his tongue was getting ready to come bursting out of his cheek, alien style -Drew I'm disappointed. First: Music sucks. mike
I like the music , it's totaly different too all the other reels. for me, I see to much particleFX, which shows other people "oh,houdini is still a nice FX software but all the other stuff we do better with M..., M.. and so on." would be nice to have more characteranimations...... I always like hearing the stories about people hating it at first and then loving it and not wanting to go back to what they were using before. Various people from other productions have told me quite directly that they use Maya (or whichever package) for rigging or animation or whatever because they're quite certain that's what the people they hire want to use, or because that's what everyone knows. Besides the steep price tag, I think a lot of companies feel that the Houdini talent pool out there is very small and would make it difficult for them to sustain a large-scale production. In a way that's true, but it's testimonials and word-of-mouth in the industry that will help get people to consider trying a different package, making a switch. michael
I think it would be a great idea to take Matt Hendershot's presentation at SIGGRAPH and put it on the SESI web site...it's a great story...
